Ontario to spread knowledge and love of horticulture The Barrie society has been an affiliate of this worthy organization for years and think readers would like to read part of the recent report RBG OUTREACH BREAKS NEW GROUND With the advent of another summer season the Royal Botanical Gardens Outreach Program enters its sixth year of operation and service The Program was conceived in 1974 by what is now the On tario Ministry of Culture and Recreation with view towards encouraging some of the Torontocentred cultural agencies to share their resources on provincewide basis The rationale Citizens in all parts of Ontario provide tax support to institutions such as the Ontario Science Centre the Royal Ontario Museum and the Royal Botanical Gardens Yet because of the vastness of the province those people outside of comparatively small radius are rarely able to visit these institutions nor can they take part in the public education programs which residents of Toronto and Hamilton have readily available Each institution has found 7266537 Mobile plant clinic coming its respective ways of taking its educational programs and services on the road to outlying communities from Sarnia to the Ottawa Valley and from Timmins to Rainy River Under the auspices of Outreach RBG staff provide con sultation on such matters as developing public gardens street tree plantings historic garden conventions and other community events The Owen Sound Horticultural Society GreyBruce Council Cookstown Fall Fair Quinte Exhibi tion in Belleville and the SportHome Show at Walden near Sudbury have all made recent use of this service By far the most extensive aspect of Outreach continues to be providing public lectures and demonstrations virtually everywhere in Ontario In five years the format has not changed What evolution has occurred has been in the in creased content and scope of the offerings From modest beginnings this amenity has burgeoned to the point where RBG staff now provide close to 300 public lectures annually to be combined audience totalling about 15000 persons Many horticultural societies and garden clubs rely on Royal Botanical Gardens to provide speakers for at least one or two of their meetings each year Recently such in stitutions as the Georgian Bay Library System and the Algonqum Regional Library System have been instrumental In arrangIng speaking tours
