entertainment Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 Heartwarming fantasy fills first Muppets film Along the way he encounters By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner Five minutes into The Mup pet Movie at the Bayfield Mall Cinema the camera descends from the clouds to show Kermit the Frog sitting on log in lily pad strumming his banjo and crooning ballad about rain bows and lovers Kermit of course is the host of the Mup pets halfhour TV show hes also the star performer in movie that works on the assumption that puppet can play adult roles just as well as movie stars can Most of the time that assump tion works very well Kermit is the perfect leading man hes cute and honest brave and compassionate When Hollywood agent tells him hes natural for the movies Ker mit takes off on his bicycle and heads for the bright lights of Los Angeles the Muppet characters Miss Piggie as beauty contest win ner Rowlf the Dog as cocktail pianist Foraie Bear as stand up comedian in the El Sleezo Cafe so that by the end of the film more than dozen Mup pets are crowding the office of studio executive Orson Welles Landing your first movie con tract isnt easy even if youre Muppet SATIRE The Muppet TV show offers some of the most sophisticated show business satire being pro duced right now the movie backs away from satiric point of view and spends more time building fable about pursuing dream In that sense it almost takes itslf too seriously Theres still plenty of comedy visual and verbal but without that satiric bite the Antique show and sale coming in September The Gryphon Theatre Guild of Barrie presents its rouImI wm IMPERIAL Show Times 700 9I5 movie bogs down occasionally When the film is good its very good despite some sappy songs by Paul Williams The high points in the film The Electric Mayhem rehearsing in Dr Harry Krishnas church Miss Piggie defending Kermit from mad German scientist Kermits final shootout with the nasty Doc Hopper whos trying to force him to do TV commercials for his chain of frogs legs restaurants will satisfy the most demanding Muppet fans And the cameo appearances by movie stars ranging from Don De Louise to Elliot Gould really arent crucial to the film The Muppets have more than enough personality to carry the entire film by themselves Even hammy performance by the temperamental Miss Piggie starts to win certain charm by the final frame Watching Miss Piggie kiss Kermit may not be everyones idea of screen romance but Kermit seems to enjoy it The Muppet Movie is funny innocent and absolutely charm ing Jim Hensons creations come close enough to being real that the film is entertaining despite the slow moments And the fantasy he offers might warm the heart of even the most devout cynic Art of the Inuit This soapstone carving of an Inuit hunter is one of 30 selected works from the lnuit art collection owned by the Toronto Dominion Bank and now on display at the local branch in the Bayfield Mall The exhibit can be seen during regular banking
