2thsigxaniner Wednesday August 15 1979 in ii unn March EsraMme Billy Bishop goes to war By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner Air Marshal William Bishop was that rare breed of man seldom found in todays comfortable stable times true hero At an age 24 when most young people are intent on completing degree impressing the boys or simply enjoy ing life Billy Bishop had already courted death on hundreds of aerial combat missions watched close friends fall from the sky in flames shot down 72 enemy aircraft and won the highest military honors Canada and England could offer So begin Rick Bulters liner notes on the just released soundtrack album of John Grays musical Billy Bishop Goes to War The play was easily the Canadian hit of the 197879 theatre season playing to capacity audiences and critical acclaim in Vancouver and Toronto The recording was done live at Theatre Passe Muraille in Toronto last In the title role Eric Petersons performance judging just from the album is brilliant He handles 17 roles sings 14 songs and even impersonates an airplane in oneman show of such impressive versatility that it comes as no sur prise to learn that American theatre superstar Mike Nichols is taking the show to Broadway in the fall our intention is not to glorify war and death but to celebrate the courage flair humor and humanity that mankind is capable of in the most difficult circumstances notes Butler producer of the play Grays script and songs do precisely what Butler describes treading the fine line between glorifying war and preaching an antiWar sermon Bishop was hero who beat the incredible odds facing pilots in the First World War the life expectancy of new pilots was just three weeks but Bishop combined expert markmanship consistent courage and large doses of good luck during his 18months in aerial combat TRAFES PROGRESS The play traces his progress from Owen Sound where he was born through the muddy illusionment of calvary of ficers life the first perilous solo flight as Royal Flying Corps recruit and the simultaneous awarding at Buck ingham Palace of the Victoria Cross the Distinguished Ser vice Order and the Military Cross Theres plenty of humor in the album Petersons ability to mimick accents and machines is flawless and kind of energetic bravado in the way Peterson addresses the au dience during his monologues At times he turns Bishop into standup comedian He makes distant war hero seem so real and so human that its easy to believe Peterson really is Billy Bishop The soundtrack album is available on Tapestry Records small Ottawa label The play itself comes to Peterborough Aug 21 to twoweek run at the Arbor Theatre Peter borough is the first stop on national tour that includes 0t tawa Halifax Montreal St Catherines Hamilton Waterloo Kingston
