197 tho examiner Saturday August 11 1979 oounfl sports Cori Alliston win it all By BILL IRRAN If the close league race is any indication followers of the South Simcoe baseball circuu should be able to look forward to one of the most exciting playoff battles in years Judging from league games Allistons dashing Canucks and the defending champion rillia Majors could be listed as favorites But Ivy Leafs Newmarket Hawks and our own Barrie Red Sox also have shown they are still very much in the contention Orillias Junior Pontiacs have demonstrated they can rise to the heights at times and also could upset the applecart with hot streak in the games that count most Bob Doners anueks looked like champions when they dumped the Majors to the tune of to in their last clash at Alliston early in the week After bad start when he gave up three runs Larry llalbert pitched super ball in blanking the defending champions the rest of the way Allision fans who witnessed that game are convinced that their anueks have the necessary power and drive and all they need is the right breaks to take their first league cham pionship since I968 Records show Ivy Leafs won it in 1972 Either trillia Juniors or Majors dominated the title in all the other years in between ANIIKS STILXIHLY MOVING AHEAD Aided by the player building policy of Bob Doner senior the anucks have been steadily moving ahead The current team looks inueh more formidable that the Canucks of year ago which lost out to the Majors in hardfought semi inal Orillias two veteran aces Jerry Udell and Brock Richardson were given close runs by Larry Halbert and Greg Campbell in hurling duels The Majors were then rated fortunate in coming out on top by one and two run scores in four games Halbert recorded 11 strikeouts and gave up only five hits in stopping the Major in their last league encounter this season Greg tampbell also indicated he was in top form for the playoffs by outpitching Don Whittaker of Orillia Juniors for two to one win on fourrhitter in another recent league game WONT INDIIRHATE BATTLING LEAFS Menwhile Monty Elliotts warning that Ivy Leafs will be battling all the way hasnt been disregarded by rival clubs We consider Ivy as tough team to beat conceded Ma jors coach Gander Ross In fact we dont believe in under rating any team fveiconfidence has wrecked many teams You just have to give your best all the way The Major downed the Newmarket Hawks four straight in last years finals But this is another year reminded Ross The Hawks this week downed rillia Pontiacs three to one on threehitter by Dan Cooney Gerry Wingrove gave up nine hits to the winning Hawks in that recent league eon test at Illllil Asked about the Barrie Rvd Sox Coach Ross smiled Well they trimmed us couple of times already said referring to protested league games in particular which Barrie won handily As said we dont take anything for granted against any club We dont give up without fight either ill IlIIINSIIIPS SIIANTY HAY
