becom By STEPHEN BAUER Of The Examiner Its always neat trick to turn hobby into fulltime career Mike and Gail Smiley who run pottery and quilting store from their home just out side Barrie have both ac complished that trick turning two hobbies into two fulltime careers Smiley has been potter for the past five years He studied the craft at Georgian College under instructor Roger Kerslake and then began sell ing his work Two years ago he quit his job with Bell after 20 years with the company to go into the pottery business full time Mrs Smiley started quilting six years ago as hobby and now works at home with her husband producing quilted items ranging from bed quilts to wall hangings to cushions Shes just finished teaching quilting course at the Georgian College Summer School of the For The Examiner ORILIJA 77 Seven funny peo ple took the Opera House au dience through fastpaced montage of comedy Tuesday night as the sixth annual Leacock Festival of Humor began here This year the festival organizers have decided to con centrate on one production comedy revue mainly for money reasons but these seven people Nancy White Dave Broadfoot Smith and Smith Tony Molcsworth and artistic directors Con Cullen and Roy Wordsworth packed so much into two and half hours its sometimes hard to keep up Braodfoot and White anchor the show as they have for several previous festivals HIGH NOTE White finished the first act on high wellheld note For those who know her mainly through short dittics as the CBCs former civil service songwriter she has surpris ingly good voice stage presence and perceptive wit which gauaranteed warm reception each time Her favorite songs about wayward Maggie Teen Andy and other such Canadian institu tions were well received Preceeding White was young comedian Tony Molesworth appearing here for the first time He combined zany wit with all the best of the worst magic juggling and ven Dance bands may return The new owner of the Brookdale Park Inn says he may bring back live bands to the hotels disco Sam Nit sopoulos owner of the on tinental Inn took over the downtown motor hote on Mon lay and says hes planning complete renovation of the disco lounge to improve business there Changes may include hr inging back live bands eliminated in February when the Brookdale went to recorded disco music Nitsopoulos said hell be making the decision on live music Park Performances begin each day at 10 am and end with show Three of the five Smiley children are pursuing an in terest in crafts encouraged by parents who spend six days week producing pottery and quilt articles for the small craft store in the backyard of their property Its infectious says Smiley Were doing it so theyre interested in it too Making pottery is relaxing and satisfying he says It
