Army worms still here but dont sweat it By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner Army worms are still pro blem in most parts of Simcoe County but there is no need for widespread panic or in discriminate chemical spray ing says an official with the Ontario agriculture ministry Lets not get into sweat says Keith McRuer agricul tural representative with the ministrys Alliston office just because one farmer is spraying doesnt necessarily mean his neighbour has to McRuer says his advice to farmers is not to spray unless the concentration lof worms warrants it Unless there are more than six to seven worms per square foot in field farms should let nature take its course he says In addition to natural predators such as toads and birds the four centimetrelong worms are being destroyed by parasites implanted in the young ones by wasps and flies McRuer says There is also less need to spray the larger worms as they will be nearing the end of their cycle he says Those which survive the parasites will turn into but terflies Rather than un cessarily spraying whole fields to control young worms says McRuer farmers should con sider spraying the strips bet ween fields of ripe and unripe crops This will reduce the number of hungry worms moving into greener acres he says Army worms actually type of caterpillar were discovered in F105 Township about two weeks ago Since then fields all across
