over amputee By LORI OIIEN if The Examiner Peggy Franks is 58 years old and getting there hasnt been easy She hasnt been well woman for years in hospital countless times She is an amputee hav ing lost almost all her left leg 10 years ago as result of com plications during one of numerous operations For fieryspirited woman who was once an entertainer and sang for troops overseas during World War 11 her failing health hasnt been easy to bear But she says she can hear anything er except being homeless Mrs Franks and her 16year old son Norman are being evicted from their Barrie apartment Aug 15 and shes frightened Hrr disability che que of $266 month is all she has to cover $259 rent and anything else she and her son require Its an impossible situation she says Her choice of suitable ac commodation is limited she is confined to wheelchair and needs building with an elevator Mrs Franks has an artificial leg but says it hurts to walk on it Speaking erratically with thick Scottish accent and fre quently trying to fight back tears Mrs Franks says her landlord isnt to blame for her eviction and she admires him for trying to keep them in the building where shes spent the past four years relatively hap pllY FRIENDS SYMIATIIIZE Her landlord neighbors doc tors and friends all sympathize with her plight but can do nothing to help The real problems started in May when Norman the only child left at home decided to leave school As soon as the ministry of community and social services learned of this it assumed there would be wage earner in the house and the $387 monthly mothers allowance cheque dropped by 3121 Only Norman wasnt able to get job until recently and even now his position is not steady So the money the ministry thought was coming into the Franks household does not exist When her husband deserted her eight years ago leaving Mrs Franks alone to raise four children she applied to Ontario Housing for accommodation but was denied for lack of funds She applied again after learning of the impending evic tion but without success She and Norman qualify for two bedroom apartment and there are none vacant say officials Mrs Franks application is on file but with
