nursing World War was one day old and she was18 The pay for anurse in train ing at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie was $4 month With one halfday week off Today she is nursing supervisor and officer in charge of infection control This week she was awarded her pin for 20years on permanent staff at the RVH Through Mrs Bauldry as special feature for Nursing Week welooked at nursing then and now Although it is certainly one of the oldest wewouldnt dare say the oldest for there is at least one that already lays claim to this title nursing was reallyonly coming into its owin as profession in the wary days when women like Grace Bauldry entered the field ROMANCE For Grace Bauldry entering nursing one day after the declaration of war was not quite as noble as it may50und atleastlnot at the outset Her goal was to become an airline hostess which in those days required degree in nursing It sounded very romantic to travel aroundto the ends of the earth she says She never made it to an airline nor did she make it to war had my bags packed all set to go she says What happened got married You couldnt be an air hostess if you were married For the same reason she was never transferred overseas Just before she was set to go her husband was transferred back And her career in nursing was interrupted for many years like so many other women bythe arrival of children In many ways herstbry is typical Both her auntand her mother hadbeen nurses both trained at the RVH And boththeir careers were interrupted in the same way She doesnt regret this and says that if she were entering the field todayeven withthc changes since the feminist movement she would notdo things any differently either by choosing another area of work or by becoming doc tor My mother should have been doctor though She hadabrilliant mind DEDICATIOI Being nurse in thosedays meant hard work There was an unmistakeable sense of duty and calling about the profession Like teaching it was one of the very few careers open to women and entéring the work force was not decision taken lightly For nurses in training was 12 hour day We were sup posed to get two hourbreak every day she says cm phasizing supposed We were paid $4 month for the first year $6 for the second and $8 for the third We had one halfday week off and you counted yourself lucky if lit was Sunday Curfew was 1000 with one late leave day St lilarys Autumn Arcade will be held Saturday October 30 from 130 to pm at 63 AnteliaSt 1100 monthly and one am leave every three months You bet we were devoted Why else would we stick to it There was next to no classroom training as there is to Now the training has moved right out of the hospital into the collegesI she says The students just come here for experience now Then we were the work force Shc recalls that during her student days the majority of the nursing staff were students with only the supervisors be ing graduates It was on the tab training for sure BABY BOOM There is an urgency senSe of emergency about the old days she recalls The diagnostic equipment of today has changed the essential mood of the hospital Today many people in the hospitalare in for tests valucahlc preventative function of the hospital certainly but 0II that has largely altered that sense of urgency In those days matter of life and death was tilt operative phrase and the nurses even those in training were much closer to its reality The war caused shortages in funds and in staff ant changed thehospital in other ways There were few mcr between the age of 18 and 45 in the hospital lots of babies but few proud daddies to see them When came in training the RVH was bustling busy place We had very few physicians but the doctors that were here worked day and night Camp Borden was so close and they had their own military hospital so the main thing rememberwas the population explosion Women often joined their husbands in the camp or living in the city but their babies could not be born in the base hospital You couldnt get room in the city then foi love nor money she recalls MADE OWN FUN The students were young they were single Thelonc hours and low pay didnt leave much room for high living We all had our little episode of not obeying the rules she recalls But for the most part they were pretty dedicated lot well awareof the importance of their call ing and the fact that not many options were open to women at thetime Nonetheless they had lot of fun says Grace Bauldry We made our own fun you had to And working those hours believe me you didnt have that much energy she laughs When she graduated in 42 the war was still on Sum mers were spent working on her fathers farm as male help of any kind was scarce commodity She was marr ried that same year while her husband was on weeks leave The remaining war years were spent working at posts throughout the province The postwar years brought babies and home life until the fifties when she returned to permanent parttimc and then fulltime staff There have been lotrof changes she says and guess Ive been part of them Nursing is so specialized now that it is almost different profession Its so lanr tastic that nothing could say could give any idea of the difference between way back when and here and now lie Postpunk coiffures If youre still having trouble adjusting to punk hairstyles then hold on toyour wig as stylist Your friend should ask for doggy bag or carry one for her leftovers Its stupidtorisk mining good purse with 70 cents worth of hamburger steak Dear Ann Landers Why inust you print the name of the City along with the signatures You have put me in hot water because of this and Ill bet lot of other people too wish you would cutit out letter appeared in your column few days ago about guy who is running around on his wife He admitted it told you how much he cares for the other woman but cant leave his wife because she has heart condition That letter was sighed with the mans initials As if that wasnt bad enough you added From Greenville Well my initials are the same as his and live in Greenville Everyone in town must read your column because our telephone hasnt stopped ringing My wife is humiliated and Im in the doghousel have never cheated on my wife in my life You owe us an apology in the paper Innocent Victim Dear Innocent Sorry created problem for you but according to the Postal Service directory there are 26 Greenvilles in the United States One each in Alabama California Delaware Florida Georgia Illinois Indiana Iowa Kentucky Maine Michigan Mississippi Missouri New Jersey New Hampshire New York North Carolina Ohio Pennsylvania Rhode Island South Carolina Texas Utah Virginia West Virginia and Wisconsin Im printing your letter but omitting the state dont think you want to hearany more about this matter Dear Ann Landers Christmas is three months away and alreadylmdreadingit Every year our family exchanges gifts It has gotte completely out of hand For example my grandparents whoare retired can barely manage on their modest pensions They still buy 30 Christmas gifts year one for the daughters sonsinlaw daughtersinlaw and sons and of course all the grandchildren Our family is not close We rarely see each other except at funerals When Christmas rolls around we get together overspend and try too hard to enjoy ourselves Most of the presents exchanged are useless Is there solution to this ongoing Charade Lafayette Ind Dear lnd gracious and sensible way to put an end to it is to write notes tome and all saying youve decided to end the holiday giftgiving and hope they will not embarrass you by sending one Announce that you are making donation to worthy cause in the names of all familymembers in lieu of presentsThen do it Consumers Save those newspapers Dont you think it is ridiculous that we import shredded newsprint from the States How can we get the government tostop this and make use of our own newsprint dont think it is the government who can change this needless waste of taxpayers money but that it is we con sumers who should be blamed and change our habits We are the people who are not offering our old newspapers for recycling We import 85 per cent of the newsprint that is essential for the manufacture of insulation That imported newsprint costs us between $40 and $50 ton Surely not every con sumer is sufficiently rich to bother about this unnecessary expense which amounts tomillions of dollars year and surely not every consumer is too lazy to tie up the weeks newspapers and put them at the end of the driveway to be pickedup and then recycled In Barrie we are fortunate to have the Huronia Recycling Association which once week collects our newspapers cardboard boxes and glass jars bottles You should telephone 7374332 to find out on which day it is collected in your area and also to register as someone who wishes to have these articles recycled This enables the truck drivers toknow precisely to which house to go on each street lnon ward the pickup service is on the same day as the garbage collection so theHuronia Recycling Association gets out early to make sure that bundles intended for them or not mistakenly picked up by the garbage collectors was astounded when was told that in such Ward anI average of 1000 lbs newspapers are picked up weekly from garbage cans Another revelation which shocked me was that only 12 per centof Barrie households are using this recycling service It is amazing how little garbage you actually have if you put out the newspapers cardboard and glass for recycling find put all your fruit and vegetable peelings on the compost cap We couldnt ask for better Service so why doesnt everyone in Barrie use it Perhaps they dont knowvabout it now that you do tell your friends Barrie consumer Should never feel ashamed of preventing financial and ecological waste Pollys Pointers Varnished trousers By Polly lramer POLLYS PROBLEM EAR lOLLY Last week washed my
