MAX HAINEs Crime Flashback It is doubtful that many people have ever heard of Tenants Harbour Maine Although it is quaint little crossroads by the sea there is no real reason to visit there Situated about ten miles from Thomaston nothing of interest has ever hap pened in Tenants Harbour with one execption In 1877 the village was the scene of one of New Englands most famous and mysterious murders Five years later in nearby Massachussetts young lady named Lizzie Borden was to stand accused of taking an axe and chopping up her mummie and daddy The Borden case was to become one of the most written about and analysed crimes ever perpetrated while the Sarah Meservey case of Tenants Har bour has been relegated to the dim memory Before the turn of the century inhabitants along the coast of Maine were primarily sailors They would take off from the northeast coast of the US in schooners and travel the world Voyages lasting over year were not uncommon In Oct 1877 Captain Luther Meservey boarded his good schooner the Bickmore for fourmonth long sea voyage His 37yearold wife Sarah had become quite accustomed to her husbands lengthy absences Sarah slim tall no nonsense woman fell quickly into her usual routine when the captain was at sea After 16 years of marriage Sarah knew the routine well She knitted sewed and cleaned the house Chores neglected for months were now completed Seldom did she leave her home other than her regular pilgrimage to the post office each day to collect her mail Sarahs last day Two months passed without any change in Sarahs routine December 22nd was to be the last day of Sarah Meserveys life It was Saturday As dusk was falling over Tenants Harbour Sarah walked down the street to the post office Once there she learned that her neighbor Mark Wall had picked up her mail Sometimes he brought her mail home with him and she would pick it up later at his house Sarah started off on the five minute walk home She paus ed and passed the time of day with few friends on the way She decided not to pick up her mail that evening Instead she entered her house and closed the door Next morning Mark Wall sent his young son to Sarahs house with her mail The boy noticed that the curtains were drawn which was rather unusual He pounded on the door but received no reply In the days which followed Sarah Meservey didnt take part in the Christmas activities of the village Snow fell No one cleared path to Sarahs door Mail piled up for her down at the post office It wasnt until Jan 29 good five weeks since Sarah was last seen that anything was done The lack of curiousity ex hibited by the inhabitants of Tenant Harbour is one of the mysteries surrounding the Meservey case It is almost beyond comprehension that in such small community not one person would decide to act after few days had elapsed let along five weeks No mention or reason for this time lapse is reported in the many newspaper accounts of the case which was covered extensively at the time of the crime We can only assume that small towns and villages residence Entering the bedroom the men found the floor strewn with glass from broken mirror Furniture was overturned and great deal of blood was on the floors and walls In the middle of the room was the frozen body of Sarah Meservey rolled snugly into quilt Next day the coroner reported that scarf had been wrap ped around Sarahs neck causing death by strangulation Several bruises were evident about the head The victims hands were tied behind her back with cod line The knots themselves were obviously seamens knots Sarah had been fully clothed in an overcoat whén she met her death This in dicated that she had been killed shortly after she had return ed from the post office weeks before Bloody handprints were all over the house On the kitchen floor police found note which was almost illegible Dated Dec 24 the letter stated that the killer hadnt murdered Sarah for money but some other reason which he didnt state Despite the note the house had been ransacked Police believed Sarah had surprised her killer in the act of robbing the house Tenants Harbour had never experienced murder The inhabitants were aghast at the thought that one of them was killer In the midst of this speculation on Feb 16 Captain Luther Meservey returned home to learn of his wifes murder Three days later Mrs Levi Hart received letter from Philadelphia dated Feb 10 and postmarked Feb 16 The let ter urged her husband who was actively helping the police in their investigation to stop assisting the authorities It also stated that the killer would never be apprehended Police believed that the letter had been written by citizen of Tenants Harbour who had managed to have it mailed from Philadelphia Sherriff Lowe in charge of the investigation from the outset had four local men write out phrase which had been included in the first letter found on Sarahs floor The phrase was killed her Based on handwriting com parison the Sherriff arrested Captain Nathan Hart As time went on it became common knowledge that Sheriff Lowe had found particular type of wooden match on the floor of the Meservey kitchen In the entire village only Capt Nathan Hart used this distinctive type of match Capt Hart stood trial for murder on Oct 1878 He swore he knew nothing of the murder of Sarah Meservey Pro secuting attorneys attempted to prove that Capt Hart couldnt account for his action on the evening of Dec 22 when he had strangled Sarah with her scarf Worried about this the Captain sneaked back into the house on Dec 24 and planted the note dated the 24th so that police would be led to believe the murder took place on that date The Captain had an ironclad alibi for the evening of Dec 24 The prosecution pressed on They were able to produce witnesses who swore that Capt Hart had discussed the murder before the body was found He had also described the conditions which existed inside the house to other residents of the village Why would Capt Hart want to kill his friend and neighbour The prosecution came up with witness who claimed the Captain had made improper advances to Sarah some six months before the murder and had been repulsed Capt Hart answered his accusers from the witness stand the examiner Friday Sept 28 1979 9A It was question of guilt The strangling of Sarah Meservey was vicious act he didnt have an alibi for Dec 22 He simply was at home that night and hadnt been seen by anyone He did state and had his evidence corroborated by friend that on Dec 24 he had been foot with his friend taking gift to his grand daughter who lived in neighbouring village Not too far from Sarah Meserveys house there had seen stranger ap proaching from the oppositie direction The night had been snowy and the mist figure unrecognizable The stranger seemed to be holding coat over his head Capt Hart thought nothing more of the stranger until the body was discovered and he was arrested After only two hours deliberation the jury returned ver dict of guity of murder in the first degree As there was no death penalty in Maine at the time Capt Hart was sentenc ed to lifeimprisonment at Thomaston Maine 3A strong suspicion There were many who believed that Hart was innocent Strong suspicion pointed to Capt Albion Meservey as the writer of the two letters and the actual murderer Dutton worked tirelessly on behalf of the convicted man He wrote are more private places than we are led to believe On Jan 29 Capt Albion Meservey cousin of Sarahs husband brought the matter of her absence to the attention of
