sports wheel Sportsmen rare breed Chay With all the talk about violence in sport thought it would be interesting out just what the word sport stands for So getting my American Heritage Dic tionary of the English Language down from the shelf looked up the word sport The definitions given were it An active pastime diversion recreation t2i specific diversion usually involving physical exercise and having set form of rules game person known for the manner of his acceptance of the rules of game or of difficult situation Not finding the words that would connect With the sports have been watching looked up the word sport sman The dictionary said man who is enthusiastic about and participates in sports One who abides by the rules of contest and accepts victory or defeat graciously SIORTSMANSIIIP still could not find the words that go with the sports that have watched for over 50 years So looked for the word sportsmanship the qualities and conduct befitting sportsman will say that most of the sportsmen whom have known through the years have had good qualities but most times during game or race their conduct was not befitting sportsman The conduct of people connected with sports such as owners of teams managers coaches trainers etc and the participants themselves has been unsportsmanlike since the beginning of most sports One has only to look at the sports clippings and records of the past to see that there has always been unsport smanliketactics In horse racing there has been fixing of races since it began remember when the old Thomcliffe Race Track was operating in the early 30s and four or five jockeys were suspended one or two for life The charges were for fixing race It was happening then and it is still happening now All the dirty things that we see and hear at our hockey games were happening when the game first started The only difference then was that player couldnt break his stick by hitting another player with it The sticks were made too well and would last for two or three years until they were worn out Even the manufacturers of hockey sticks are not very sportsmanlike by making sticks that wont last mueh more than one game Illll€ VIOLENCE When was bicycle racing as young man many times spilled when competitor would deliberately knock me down in order to beat me and must say that in order to survive in the sport had to do the same guess must have learned to be an expert at it for rode professional ly with all the best riders in the world Back in the 1920s and 30s wrestling was popular sport in Toronto The old Mutual Street Arena was packed every Wednsday night with unruly fans At that time everyone thought that the game was on the up and up until one night wrestler by the name of Ernie Dusek was being carried off unconscious on stretcher when fan put lit cigar against Ernies leg Dusek jumped from the stret cher and chased the fan caught him and beat him up before the police could move in There was court case over this incident and out of this court case came the rul ing that all professional wrestling matches must be billed as exhibitions The same goes for the Holler Derby that is why you never see the police step in to stop fight in roller der by Both wrestling and roller derbie are drawing big crowds guess we must be living in world of deceit and we must love it or we would not patronize some of these socalled sports By CATHY HEATHER Of The Examiner Jim Hamilton of Barrie was riding his Yamaha 400 along gravel road somewhere near Dusseldorf West Germany The road suddenly swung into sharp 90 degree curve Hamilton made the turn and came up to major road crossing He looked both ways down the road and not seeing anything to impeded his path started across the road Sudv denly truck appeared out of nowhere and bore down on Hamilton and his bike Hamilton reacted instantly and jumped off his bike The truck hit the bike while Hamilton landed safely on his feet at the side of the road But the truck didnt just smash Hamiltons bike it also smashed any hopes Hamilton had of winning medal in the World Team Trophy Inter naional Six Day Trails lISDTi at the Dayden Military base in WestGermany Hamilton was one of 16 Canadian riders that made the trip to what Hamilton refers to as the Olympics of motorcy cle crosscountry racing Of the 16 Canadians only two finished DEMANDING COURSE We had lot of bad luck said Jim It was really demanding course and few guys four or five got knocked out because of crashes There were lot of rocks with slipr pery clay and you really had to keep our concentration Needless to say Hamilton was very disappointed to have been knocked out by the inci dent with the truck but happy that his bike and he were not too badly damaged didnt even get scartch said Jim Even though rode my bike back to the start after the accident it was too badly damaged to con tinue racing The accident happened the third day of racing The first two days Hamilton had main tained time just one minute off the time needed to win gold medal The third day Hamilton was running bit late couple of crashes and slowed him down and he hadnt zeroed all his checkpints there were 12 checkpoints over the 150 km loop course Usually at all road crossings there are race officials that act as guards to prevent the kind of situation Hamilton found himself in FOR EARLY DELIVERY Includes the somewhat weathered bike he rode in the ISDT Worlds in West Germany Examiner Photo But by the time Hamilton reached that particular cross ing the guards had packed up early and left was pretty shaken up by the accident said Hamilton Thats the closest lve ever come to doing myself in Hamilton is no newcomer to the sport of motorcycle cross country racing In fact it was not even his first time at the ISDT Worlds he went last year when they were held in Sweden and picked up bronze medal in the 500 cc class Junior Cs hosting Alliston 0m 775 Jr hockey team takes on Alliston Hornets of the They are led by Frank arneyale who last year broke the leagues single SCIISOII SCOIIII IliII ATTENTION Hamilton had to qualify in order to make the ISDT this year He went down to the States Tennessee and Michigan and the results from those races plus his finishes in the Enduros in Ontario and his result from twoday qualification at Durham all helped him make the team Hamilton points out that the sport is increasing in populari ty in Canada two years ago racing officials couldnt find enough Canadians interested in going to the Worlds so they sent some Americans to race for Canada But now Cana dian rider is hard pressed to make spot on the team GROWN UP ON BIKES Hamilton has grown up with bikes Originally from Toron to he began riding minibikes on dirt trails around Toronto and at his cottage in Halibur ton He moved on to smaller trail bikes around 125 ccs and then when he was 16 he bought 250 It wasnt long before Jim began racing in the Enr Enduro races in Ontario and it wasnt long before he startedwinning When didnt know much about racing Would go in race and pick guy knew was top rider said Hamilton Then would try to follow him picked up lot of good riding tips that way Hamilton isnt the only member of his family in terested in cycle sports His brother Bob rides in road races and his parents own Hamiltons Cycle and Sports just past Painswick on Hwy ll My parents started to get interested in bikes after we started racing explained Jim They ended up buying this place and moving up to Barrie Jim works fulltime for Cycle Sports Motorcycle crosscountry riding has been declared one of the most difficult sports in terms of fitness and many claim that the riders com peting are among the fittest athletes in the world Hamilton jogs daily and also swims and works The sport also entails leam ing the mechanics of motor cycles Hamilton says that in Germany all the racers bikes were impounded until 10 minutes before the race started The riders were then given that short time to work on their bikes Evidently the guys who knew how to prepare their bikes and had thorough knowledge of the bikes held great advantage Hamilton learned about mechanics by fiddling around with his own bikes While many recognize how gruelling motorcycle cross country racing is the Canalt dian government has so far refused to do so The sport is not given any financial sup port from the government because according to Sport Canada the bike is motorized and therefore doing all the work It cost Jim about $2000 to make the journey with his bike to West Germany The course in Germany con sisted of two parts 150 km loop that went through forests swamps over gravel roads and because this years race was located in mountainous region the course included very steep uphills and downhills as well as rivers and rocky terrain rider was required to complete the loop twice day for six straight days Not only that but after each completion rider then went onto what is called aspeedtest The speed test consisted of riding over grass field for about three miles explained Hamilton We were timed over the course and the time recorded there was used as tiebreaker in case two riders came in with the same time over the loop The speed test is one of Hamiltons selfacclaimed strengths In Ontario he set speed test records in every race he entered But Hamilton says that some of the Americans are pretty fast in the speed tests LOT OF POLITICING Hamilton says that lot of politicing goes on at the ISDT Worlds Many countries are determined to win especially the European countries and will stop at nothing even cheating to do so Some coun tries have bikes identical to the ones being ridden by their racers standing by so that they can switch instantly should something go wrong with the other bike repair it and then switch back lot of cheating used to go on but this year they tighten team that runs together Cathy Eydt of lnnisdale fourth from the front stopped four
