Harrison Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney might play together again brings shrug Graham Nash said he really is not inter ested because his priorities right now concern nuclear power and solar energy Stephen Stills took cautious approach With those guys Ill believe it when see it Dionne Warwick jumped at the suggestion and said she would be the first to buy ticket for Beatles concert Ive toured all over the world with the Beatles and dont think anybody loves them as much as do she said If they do get back together which really do doubt think it would be great The United Nations has asked for The Kids Are Alright Who film captures excitement By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner The Kids Are Alright Jeff Steins new film about The Who at the Imperial doesnt give damn about the politics of rock and roll the meaning of the music or the psychological significance of the groups love affair with instrument bashing The film isnt as elegant controlled as Martin Scorseses The Last Waltz and it doesnt provide the insights of film like Janis but it does capture the frenzied excite ment of The Who in live performance The Who have been together since 1964 and that makes them one of the longest surviving rock bands in the world Its surprising that its taken this long for somone to make film about The Who because no other rock band comes alive on the screen the way they do STAGE PRESENCE The reason for that is the supercharged stage presence of Pete Townsend Roger Daltrey and the late Keith Moon the stonefaced John Entwhistle projects no personality at all in the film Townshend doesnt so much play the guitar as assault it striking chords with windmill strokes of his arm prancing and dancing around the stage like hyperactive fiveyearn old Daltry with his cascading curls and piercing blue eyes looks like teenyboppers sex fantasy brought to life And Keith Moon rocks most eccentric and original drummer is wideeyed rubberfaced lunatic every time the camera moves in for closeup Its the groups perfect synthesis of visual and musical ex Dancers after defection Bolshoi Ballet dancers Leonid Koslov and his wife Valentina Koslova are shown at secret location in Los Angeles after their defection last Sunday The artists said their detection was by no means spurofthemoment gamble but stemmed from quiet determination to explore new directions citement that makes the film worth watching Stein has assembled footage from concerts TV shows interviews and studio sessions mixed in some slapstick routines and pro duced film that can only be described as frustrating jum ble of the brilliant the ad and the indifferent The best musical sequences more intense than any other rock film Ive ever seen are from The Whos ap pearance at Woodstock Townshend Daltry and Moon are all at the peak of their form in these scenes and Townshends solos show just how powerful guitarist he can be when he pushes himself all the way The earliest footage shows The Who in their first ap pearances on British TV the latest footage shows them recording Who Are You in studio session In Between we hear some of their best material songs like Tommy My Generation Wont Get Fooled Again and Magic Bus INTERVIEW CLIPS The short interview clips tell us nothing about the group except their refusal to take anything seriously when camera is pointed at them Ringo Starr interviews Moon and both come across as fools Townshend gives monosyllabic reply to Geman interviewers pretentious question about the cultural significance of The Whos music All four musi cians demolish TV interview by ripping one anothers clothes off Because of the arbitrary way Stein has put the film together theres no chronological progression to the film footage The Whos music is powerful enough to survive Steins casual approach but its tempting to think of the kind of film that might have come from someone ambitious enough to look beneath the turbulent surface of the music Canada Council gets to offset budget freeze TORONTO CP The financiallystricken Canada Council will get an extra $2 million to help it back on its feet David MacDonald the new state secretary said Friday At news conference Mac Donald said the money brings Canada Councils funds up to equal to its budget for last year MacDonald said the four year freeze of the Canada Councils budget had put the council in financial peril He said he hoped the
