the examiner Kraft meets challenge Of VillaLobosetu By STEPHEN iALER Of The Examiner When Norbert Kraft sat down to play the guitar Thursday afternoon at the Childrens an nex he took the time to explain the purpose of the VillaLobos etudes he was about to play Its good thing that he did VillaLobos has written some of the finest 20th century music for the classical guitar but his etudes hardly rank as crowd pleasers Theyre pieces that demand virtuoso technique on the part of the performer and their musical value ranks far below that of the composers Preludes and Choros works But the bulk of Krafts 30 minute concert was devoted to the VillaLobos etudes because the young Toronto guitarist will be performing them next week when he competes in an Italian guitar competition devoted to the works of the Brazilian com poser DIFFICULT As difficult as the etudes are Kraft winner in the 1979 CBC Music Festival met the com posers technical challenges very well and also showed himself to be sensitive inter preter of the music Krafts playing is almost always clean and precise Hes not an emotional player but he does work hard to vary the dynamics and tonal qualities of each piece he plays The lyricism of the seventh and tenth eludes was brought out to good effect while the throbb ing rhythmic quality of the twelfth etude clearly underscored the folk influences in VillaLobos music FINAL WORK The final work on the pro gram Gulianis Grande ver ture was yet another of the many 19th century guitar works dedicated to displaying the capabilities of the instrument Iuliani filled the piece with conventional rhythmic and melodic passages and Kraft played it well but the result was little too easy to take and Saturday Sept 22 1979 entertainmnt Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 Norbert Kraft Toronto guitarist and winner of the I979 CBC Music Festival performed concert at the Childrens Annex Thursday afternoon Ex aminer Photo the music too bland to have muchimpact Its unfortunate that Kraft could not have chosen more in teresting material for the con cert His comments on each of the pieces helped the audience understand what they were hearing but the music served as apoor introduction to the classical guitar The concerts focus on technical display seemed more appropriate to guitar competition than to public performance in library fantasy musical comes tO library Songs
