hits and 400 home runs in his career will meet President Carter at the White House today sports wheel Parents fighton By EI HARPER Chay Another hockey season is about to start and already there is talk of too much violence in Ontario minor hockey provincewide survey released last Monday showed that parents of minor league players believe that there is too much violence and too much emphasis placed on winning The Ontario Hockey Council sent out 78754 questionnaires asking parents about the quality of minor hockey in Ontario and for their recommendations Less than half the parents responded to the questionnaire showing that more than half the parents with children playing minor hockey just dont give damn about the game their boys are playing in The survey showed that 94 It per cent of parents believe children under age 10 should be learning skating passing and shooting rather than playing in competitive leagues Most parents said they wanted more emphasis on the basics of hockey such as skating and puck control and less body contact Approximately 54 per cent would bar body contact for youngsters under 10 years of age TOO VIOLENT large percentage said that they would agree that minor hockey is too violent and that something should be done about it Most parents felt that the parents attending games create problems by pushing their children too hard This is un doubtedly true majority of parents would support certification pro gram for minor league hockey coaches Most parents felt that officials try to do good job but the verbal abuse that they have to endure make it difficult for them and the parents rate themselves as the number one offenders Other major concerns of parents in regard to minor hockey are the education of parents to the rules and knowledge of the game time spent in basic skills and parent behavior Over the past several years of writing sports column have stated many times all the things that the majority of parents now say they would like to see changed in minor hockey It is only in the last year or so that parents have changed to this way of thinking Of course there is too much violcncc lll minor hockey and of course there is too much emphasis put on winning Although Reuben Baetz Ontario Minister of Culture and Recreation has been promised report on minor hockey with recommendations for its improvement by the tll who will hold public forums it is my belief that minor hockey will stay about the same for sonic years to come MONEY MEN CONTROL As long as the big money men control professional hockey the amateur leagues will continue to develop hockey players who will fit into their plans The public on the whole would not attend an NHL game if it were not for the violence It is much the same as the programs on our TV sets most are filled with violence Until the day the majority of people deplore the sight of violence and refuse to attend any athletic games that pro mote and encourage violence hockey will not be cleaned up and become sporting event again The only way that complete change in hock or any sport could be made is by educating our youngsters at school and it would have to be from the first day they start kindergarten dont believe that cleanup of violence in hockey will come for very long time But sure hopcl am wrong BGM first baseman Barb Bell gets the ball too late to nab this Kolmar
