enertaimenr Editor Stephen Gauer7266537 Cabaret show continues despite loss of producer The Littles Hill Players who are presenting the cabaret show Copa Banana have an nounced the departure of pro ducer Jim Brown who is leav ing Barrie to take up the posi tion of financial administrator for the Regina Modern Dance Works Of course were more than delighted for Jim says Ingrid Miller the new producer of the show Most of the ground work for this show has already been laid by him We wish him every success and hope that we can cope in his absence Ms Miller describes Copa Banana as costumes galore bright happy lively music set in congenial night club at mosphere The music is pure fun We have nostalgic tunes from the 19205 and 1930s the great hits of the 19505 and even disco numbers from the past year or so Some of the songs listed on the shows playbill are Sixteen Tons Camptown Races In the Good Old Summertime Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini and Copacabana DIRECTOR We have talented and energetic director this year in the person of Nick Schols said Mrs Miller and highly gifted musical director well known to Barrie audiences Marilyn Campbell Ms Camp bell was recently involved in the production of The Pajama Game where she acted as musical director and pianist She brings wealth of ex perience to Copa Banana The cast includes other per formers who are familiar names to Barrie theatregoers Connie Hodges is back Cpnnie scored hit with her portrayal of Liz in the Littles Hill pro duction of Present Laughter Of course we couldnt do without Marty Hayes who played the amusing and agreeable butler in the same play hes back with his beautiful deep voice Nick Schols has also made remarkable discovery in the person of 22yearold Susan Crawford Ms Crawford who has had considerable ex perience with Etobicoke Debra ShelsweH member of the Copa Banana cast The cabaret show comes to the Embassy Hall Oct I0 to I3 Musical Productions is carry ing large part of the vocal sec tion of the show She sings just like an angel said Ms Miller FAMILIAR FACES Other familiar faces in the show are Ben Strudwick who appeared in the Gryphon Theatre production of Night watch this summer and Rob Townsend who starred in Pa jama Game earlier this year Copa Banana is the second cabaret show presented by the amateur theatre group Last winter they did Bottoms Up with considerable financial and critical success The people of Barrie just seem to love musical shows said Ms Miller if thats the case were going to see that they get exactly what they want For ticket information call Emmy Schols at 7268167 Copa Banana runs at the Embassy Hall from Oct 10 through Oct 13 Textured shading and detail strengths of Dix drawings By STEPHEN BAUER Of The Examiner The finely detailed drawings of Peter Dix now on display in the Duffy Lounge at the Clarkson Hotel offer fresh perspectives on familiar sub jects and intriguing glimpses of subjects not so familiar Dix has formidable techni que with the basic tools of paper and pencil within the limited range of white and gray tones he accomplishes great deal bringing life to his por traits and scenes of India and the near east TEXTURES One portrait larger than life size face of an old woman shows off the artists ability to create beautiful textures with pencil The womans face is ravaged by wrinkles and by an expression close to despair but her essential dignity shines through The portrait evokes compassion and sympathy and ranks as the most expressive in Majors stars HOLLYWOOD AP Lee Majors and Burgess Meredith will star in The Last Chase futuristic adventure movie to be filmed in Canada It is set in time when there is no more gasoline to power automobiles and most of the population is under 13 Music fantasy BARRIE the eight Dix drawings in the show The haunting quality of this drawing gains strength paradoxically through the delicacy of the shading The face brims with character yet seems on the verge of dissolv ing into the white space that surround it Its remarkable drawing that builds kind of visual momentum the longer you look at it The portrait of the old woman is flanked by two smaller por traitsone shows distinguish ed man sitting in chair while the other shows Shakespearean actor posing on set Both are done in pencil and both show Dixs mastery of detail and technique though neither can match the centre portrait in emotional power Dixs other drawings are more mysterious evoking scenes of Egypt and India and even African tribesmen shown emerging from the ages of book in dreamy landscape setting Here Dixs images may puzzle the viewer Each pro vokes questions of setting con tent and detail while at the same time trying to evoke the atmosphere of foreign land and culture Completing the Clarkson show are drawings by John Coburn and Michael Maynard Theyre vastly different in con tentCoburn draws rural schoolhouse while Maynard draws sensuous nude womanbut both offer sharp contrast to the Dix drawings Dix is tight and precise artist carefully completing each im age Coburn and Maynard favor freer and looser style where lines and shadings are used to suggest images rather than sharply define them The contrast is intriguing The Clarkson show of work by Dix Maynard and Coburn con tinues through to the end of the month ORilliA THEATRES cu344mg AT 7L905 ADUII
