on daughter Dear Ann Landers was talking on the phone to guy like lot when my mother picked up the extension down stairs and yelled Youve been gabbing for 45 minutes Get off have to make call My friend asked Who was THAT was so humiliated could barely talk said That was my mother She must have had rough day Id better hang up Mom ran upstairs and screamed for 20 minutes She said shouldnt have said what did that it made her look bad Mom is always doing something to embarrass me and ggnt know how to deal with it Im 15 too young to leave me know Mom has miserable life Dad drinks and hes never around Any advice for me Blue Betty Dear Betty You have an excellent understanding of the situation as indicated by your statement know Mom has miserable life etc This is what causes most of the ugly behavior in the world Psychiatrists call it displacement It is commonly known as taking out our own unhappiness on somebody else You can reduce the friction by reacting as little as possiin and avoiding situations that might provoke her Easy Oi course not but hang in there honey Youll live through it Dear Ann As counsellor on alcohol and drug abuse for the military am able to reach many people who have drinking problem but not nearly as many as your column Would it be asking too much to have this printed There seems to be total lack of understanding of the word alcohol Most people believe it refers only to whiskey and wine that beerdrinkers need not be con cerned about becoming alcoholics Example local wife after many visits to the clinic ad mitted she had been heavy beerdrinker for 10 years averaging three to four cases per week She was surprised when the doctor told her she had cirrhosis of the liver Her comment was cant understand it never drank anything stronger than beer Webster defines alcohol colorless volatile flammable liquid formed by vinous fermentation and contained in wine beer whiskey and the other fermented and distilled liquors of which it is the intoxicating principle Please Ann pass the word If its in your column maybe theyll believe it Riverside Calif Dear Cal Its been in my column before many times Perhaps if they see it often enough it will soak in Dear Ann Landers Im woman who works in an oil re finery We are required to wear hard hats just like the men have heard it said that the constant wearing of hard hats will cause loss of hair dont believe woman would go bald from it but Id like to know how the hard hats affect both sexes Love My Job Dear Love dermatologist in Washington DC Dr Robert Stolar researched this one He made it point to personally examine the hard hats of the workmen at the building sites near his office According to Dr Stolar the inner surface that circles the hard hat is soft and pliable There is no undue pressure on the scalp Movement is frequent The hats will not creat hair loss among either men or women So keep the lid on For What Worth Whos minding the kids BY MARGARET WORTH went to Montreal two weeks ago for few days work ing holiday Dont worry Mum said daughter com fortingly as hastily packed my suitcase Well take care of everything here while youre away er what was it you said we should have for supper tonight listed several possibilities but she looked confused and wandered away Dont worry Mum said my small son as rooted through the shoerack looking for my wooden sandals Ill take care of things while youre away what did you say had to do about the geraniums on the porch My 12 year old duckkeeper panic stricken told me that her small charges had nothing left to eat reassured her Food was on the way Three people volunteered to do the grocery shopping everyone denied that it was their turn to do the laundry and noone even mentioned emptying the garbage put my case in the car and left Montreal was fantastic And my stay turned out to be much more holiday than work Our hostess was charming With an eloquent wave of her hands she assured us that her city was ours for the taking Bubbling with enthusiasm she toured us around the cathedral the stores the new com plexes the old buildings Telling us it was definitely the only way to travel she raced us up and down escalators and stairways from one subway to the next We visited Man and his World and the famous Ecuries DYouville We ate in tiny French restaurants and under the familiar sign of the big Everywhere we were met with kindness courtesy and impeccable English We drove back into Ontario with warm feeling about everything except the roads Hey Mum said daughter as unpacked my suitcase Im glad youre back the suppers last week were awful Mum said my small son happily the geraniums didnt die Have you seen the ducks asked Karin wideeyed Theyre enormous and Dad and did the shopping and bought all kinds of neat things like ginger marmalade and dill pickles and Surpressing small inner sigh walked downstairs to the kitchen Montreal seemed long way off and really had to go and say hello to the ducks Pollys Pointers Removing wallpaper DEAR POLLY wonder if you or your rcadcrs havc any good ideas for removing wallpaper have lllCd nearly everything can find in the stores and nothing works very
