Mots Garden deserve compost heap By JEAN GABLE The summer seems to have gone and already the lawn must have the leaves raked off it before cutting if you have many trees around What do you do with your leaves Well this brings me to very favourite topic of mine the compost box Every gardener should compost Once you have gathered that rich humus in your hands and put it where your treasured plants are to grow you will never ever be without it again Compost is not hard to make it is really just rotted down vegetation which can be grass leaves or kitchen scraps the refuse from canning and freezing and all the garden debris that is not diseased have told in this column many times the basis of making compost pile but constantly get questions about making one The size depends on your garden size and what you will have to put in it figure to make two tons per year so need large box To do the best job you should always have two compost heaps going one to be used as you need it and one in the process of rotting ADI SOII Always get centre that is rotting well That is easy just now as the peaches apples pears and tomato skins all rot quickly Keep adding shovel full of soil or better still some manure if available use compost maker that has seaweed base that coems from Victoria and it works well for me $1 packet makes ton If you want to see some nice compost and how neat the heap is visit Ray marshal at Garrett Crescent in Barrie am sure Ray would be happy to tell you how he makes his compost You must keep the pile moist and if you can turn it every few weeks it will help lot to hasten decomposition At our house the emptying of the compost box each year is big job and doesnt get completed until midOctober until it is emptied make piles of the garden debris in the garden and move it all to the compost box when it is empty The varied piles are often steaming hot when put them in the box and this helps lot It is everybodys duty to conserve our precious soil and by adding humus you are doing just that etc or on your phlox or other garden flowers cut off the foliage and put it in the garbage Sprinkle sulphur all over the area and spray with Benomyl and next year set up pro gram of spraying with fungicide regularly as preven tative Once it is in it is hard to control SOCIETY NEWS Someone who must love flowers lifted my lovely Asparagus Fern from its spot
