The seasons TLC helps onion ants TRAYNOR MCFARLANE Onion ants we call them None of your carpenter grease red or soldier types just lain onion ants We first notic them in the kitchen the other night as we skinned onions for the Irish stew The noise was faint hardly perceptible at all but persistent We looked up from our task wiped tear from an eye and cocked our head listening Yes there it was kind of muted hum like thousands of sniffles It was coming from the floor area so we looked around but saw nothing Still it went on Finally we bent down and peered under the kitchen cupboard and the noise got louder What we saw startled us SCURRYING AROUND There were literally thousands of shiny black ants scurrying around over in and out of small piece of onion we must have drop ped puddle about the size of 25centpiece surrounded the section of acrid onion At first we thought it was juice from the vegetable but closer inspection showed the liquid was pouring from the microscopic eyes of the tiny insects They were all crying weeping At first we thought it was some kind of funeral ritual but we soon realized it wasnt sorrow kind of crying but was caused by the onion Still it did startle us Some of the tiny mites were lying on their backs little hooves flailing about in show of emotion or was it pain The concerted hum of weeping became veritable roar as more hordes joined the throng and we almost felt sorry for the piece of onion IDEA STRIKES We didnt have the heart to disperse the happy weeping insects Then we had humane thought We ripped off piece of paper towel and began tearing it will probably be known to luturc generations as Clarks Folly Its an aucicnt and largely discredited lav gimmick that Joe Clark and the Con servatives seized upon year ago aImOst in desperation as they searched for ways to dis lodge the entrenched Trudeau Liberals But the fact that the Conservatives suc ceeded in putting an end to the 11year tenure of Pierre Trudeau is not in itself valid reason for going ahead with an unsound plank in the campaign platform Yet Finance Minister John Crosby is still promising to do exactly that in his first budget to allow an annual deduction of up to $5000 for interest payments on first mortgage on principal residence in Canada and up to $1000 for municipal property taxes on principal residence The reasons given The plan would reducc the cost of honic ownership stimulate ac tivity in rcsidcntial construction in the home furnishings industry and in the economy generally NOW AND FOREVER Even if those benefits were to flow from the interest and tax deduction temporary stimulus is no reason to create permanent or structural tax change Once the plan is in place it will be virtually we want your opinion Something on your mind Send Letter to the deduction Clarks folly impossible to discontinue it in the future as the Americans who have similar loophole have found Families who buy houses be cause of these deductions would be justifiably indignant if the loophole were to be closed But its unlikely that the Conservative plan would in fact bring about any economic stimulation House prices have already been stimulated which is different matter and interest rates are sure to be stimulated by the extra demand for mortgage loans That spells inflation which is about as stimulating as William Davis speech If one lesson is clear from our economic experience of recent years it is that inflation is steadily undermining the foundations of real economic growth The interestdeduction proposal is in flationary in second way The cost to the government through loss of tax revenue is estimated at $400 million in the first year rising to $18 billion after four years when the plan has been fully phased in The government deficit is already running at $113 billion year Even Crosbie has conceded cant promise it wont have an effect on inflation BAD TIMING If there is any such thing as right time to introduce more inflation and there are legitimate arguments for and against that proposition this isnt such time The United States appears to be moving into re cession and greater dose of inflation could be especially harmful Even the Conservatives in sticking stubbornly to their campaign platform seem to have lost sight of the original premise for the interest deduction Its purpose was supposed to be to en courage investment in housing In the first place the interest deduction is an inefficient way of providing such encouragement Second place Canadians are probably among the best housed people in the world although let it be granted there is plenty of room for improvement If investing is to be encouraged lets en courage it in areas with longrun productive potential so as to create jobs that will last for more than one OHEARN Queens Park Columnist Thomson News Service TORONTO matter of considerable interest over the next several months will be whether Ontario and particularly Premier Davis can avoid being directly drawn into the Quebec referendum controversy With the vote due in the spring the referendum debate from now on will of course escalate And the separatists will be looking for and using all possible am munition Ontario potentially could be such piece of ammunition With good many Quebecois there is such an innate distaste for this province that if SCOOPS Jane Fair played it July 25 at the Ontario Gallery of Art We quote David Lancashire writer for Globe and Mail Perhaps subdued by the surroundings Janes demeanor was bit proper and schoolmarmish but her sound she was playing tenor was good and the music was anything but ladylike Miss Fair hasa light dry eggshell tone and she employed it in short choppy phrases instead of long line It gave the proceedings thoughtful air She also avoided the harsh garrulity common to todays tenor players She was backed by guitar bass and drums The quartet sounded well rehearsed but it thrummed along without really taking flight until the final number My Secret Love which began with Miss Fair and guitarist Lorne Lofsky glancing notes off each other then settled into few dancing choruses with Jane evidently more relaxed stretching and extending her ideas for fine finish Jane Fair began her musical career with Barrie Central Collegiate Band when Dr Allen Fisher was director Her per formance at the Art Gallery sponsored by Imperial Oil was followed by he most celebrated jazz pianist of Canada none other than Oscar Peterson Webstors World Dictionary describes jazz kind of music originally improvised but now also arranged characterized by syn copation rubato heavily accented 44 time dissonaces melodic variations and unusual there is grounds for charge that it was trying to put its finger into Quebec internal affairs this could be powerful influence It could even conceivably swing the referendum to separation UNION REJECTED To date Premier Davis has obviously been well aware of this and has conducted himself accordingly He has cautiously attempted to make it clear to Quebec that Ontario wants it to stay in confederation But he has carefully avoided anything that might be regarded as trying to force On tarios view upon it The farthest he has gone has been to reject flatly an economic union And with this it has been quite noticeable that MODERN POLITICAL arrow when she belts out tune tonal effects on the saxophone woman for the first time This reminds me of the year when The Examiner decided to spon sor an elderly man for this popular event He was William Lennox of Ivy and Thornton area Very musical Billy was director of the famous Ivy Citizens Band of around 4050 years ago He could play any brass instru ment including cornet and trombone or baritone horn Two sons Frank and Mervyn were good musicians on the horns And let me mention baseball Frank was an infielder Merv southpaw pitcher known as Lefty who not only helped Herman Jennett pitch Ivy to titles but Barrie as well But lets get back to Father William The Walls father and son decided he should try Shelburne where this OT fiddle deal was arranged by Rotary given national CBC on radio and well publicized by the local weekly The Free Press and Economist So this guy was assign ed the job of taking Billy Lennox to Shelburne sections When we thought there was enough we dropped the little hankies onto the seething mass of life They must have realiz ed what it was all about ants are fairly in telligent creatures for they grabbed each piece as it fluttered down and we could see them dabbing their small eyes Was that roar of gratitude that swelled up or were they just blowing their tiny noses Guess well never know because just at that moment the two whitecoated intruders came in gently led us away and put us back in the padding We imagine the ants had ball with what was left of the onion which we managed to craftily knock from the counter to the floor before we left Interpreting the news Tough choices at summit meet By JOHN WARD and entering him Thats not jazzy but its characterized by the qualities of jazz music Lively slang He could fiddle all the bugs off sweet potato vine Stephen Benet Can Premier Davis avoid referendum involvement since he first made his statement on this some time ago he has pretty well avoided anything further In this course the premier has had to use goat restraint Personally as Canadian he feels very strongly on the unity question To him it is really unthinkable that Canada should in any way break up But as leader he has known he cant let this show To date he has been able to contain himself Butfrom now on the pressures will be more extreme The debate itself will be increasingly more prominent and with this demands on the On tario premier to declare himself WHEN YOU 1055 our 9llE or YOUR loss NEW YORK CP The nonaligned countries are dealing with some tough choices at their Havana summit meeting One of the most important is the showdown between the moderate neutralists and the radicals who want to tug the movement closer to the Soviet Union The geopolitical hazards in such move are apparent to most of the participants and the majority appear to oppose the Cubanled manoeuvre The nonaligned movement was founded in the 1960s by such leaders as Marshal Tito of Yugoslavia Jawaharlal Nehru of India and Gama Abdel Nasser of Egypt as tightrope balanced carefully between the eastern and western blocs Now however with many of the founders dead and others like Tito showing their age the more radical members see an opportunity to bring more of the
