Can Orillia Junior Pontiacs go all the way and win the South Simcoe baseball league title That is key question currently receiving attention from followers of the county circuit as teams prepare for the final series to decide the 1979 championship It will be an allOrillia series as the youngsters try to stop the defending champion Majors winners over Newmarket Hawks in the league semifinals In battling their way to the finalsthe young Pontiacs have been the surprise team of the season in the area loop Even if we dont win out we have done much better than ex pected summed up an elated manager Mel St Onge who has guided the youngsters with the help of former pitching star Ron Johnston The last place finishers of year ago just squeezed into the playoffs by taking fourth place in the regular schedule But the major accomplishment was over taking the first place Alliston Canucks who were generally favored to win out When Bill Edgars team trounced them 172 in the nor few rated the Pontias much chance Alliston also won 82 while Pontiacs took their games by close scores mostly due to stellar itching by Gerry Wingrove Outfiel ers Chris Long and Al Fenton and infielder Ralph Dominelli were the clutch hitters chiefly responsible for giv ing Wingrove just enough runs to emerge on top in 32 53 and 42 triumphs to make the upset possible Veteran southpaw pitcher Brock Richardson was given special credit by Orillia coaches Gander Ross and Doug Howard for his endurance in pitching three splended ames in enabling the Majors to win out over thirdplace Haw As secondplacers in the schedule the Majors entered the series as favorites but were given close run by the battling Hawks all the way We were unlucky to lose said Hawks coach Bill Jay who conceded Richardsons pitching was main factor But he pointed out Dari Cooney hurled splendid ball for the Hawks too Newmarket lost one game by default when they arrived in Orillia with only eight players This was due to three young players including pitcher Bill Dunlop playin juvenile the same evening It was the break that efeated us lamentedJay HOME ADVANTAGE For finishing higher in the standing the Majors had the original advantage of three home games in the best of five series However they blew it and forced the deciding contest at Newmarkets fairgrounds by playing 77 draw in one home game The Majors lost the opener to Newmarket 73 and also dropped 21 decision when Cooney outhurled Richardson But Richardson came back the next evening with five hitter to post 51 triumph Brock gave up only six hits when Majors took the sixth game and the series in 54 extra inning victory in the deciding contet at Newmarket The clash of the two Orillia teams in the South Simcoe league final is not first Back in 1969 and 1971 these teams battled it out in the same finals The Juniors won it back in 1969 when they had Jerry Udell as pitching ace GOLD CHAMPIONSHIP AT BONAIRE Turning to golf Roy Copeland
