Wlt 12A the examiner Thursday Oct as 1979 Remember last winter Test battery lubricate before winter sets in Remember last winter Many people would like to forget the blizzards that piled up waisthigh snow drifts in their driveways and buried all but the tops of parking meters In many areas earthmovers and even the National Guard ware called into action it seemed as if spring would never come Spring finally came summer too and car owners are now facing the inevitable again winter But the Automotive In formaton Council says you wont have to face winter car breakdowns if you start Winterizing now Test your batterys charge level Check the interior water level of the cells and inspect and clean the battery connec tions and cables Drain and flush the radiator and refill with antifreeze Have its potency checked Examine hoses clamps and fan belts for wear Check snow tires for wear before mounting Buy new ones if necessary Maintain the recommended air pressure and check it often Underinflated tires get less of grip on slip pery surfaces and also cause accelerated wear Test and adjust brakes before faulty one give you trouble on slippery roads Check brake fluid adding more if necessary Have an engine tuneup and Pollution one thing going down In an inflation ridden time when everything seems to be going up there is one problem area that appears to be diminishing Air pollution from automotive sources is showing steadily descending curve This encouraging trend is largely due to more sophis ticated emission control systems developed by manufacturers and increasing use of inspection programs by governmental agencies New emission inspection pro grams are being launched in the California South Coast Air Basin involving six counties in the Los Angeles area The area with its 66 million vehicles initially will require motorists to submit their vehicles for inspection before any change in registration buying car or moving it into the state Eventually all vehicles will have to undergo inspection before annual renewal of registration OTHER STATES smiliar mandatory inspec tion on change of vehicle ownership is being introduced in Nevadas Clark and Washoe counties Las Vegas and Reno are principal cities in these counties All vehicles will have to pass inspection before being licens ed Entering voluntary inspec tion programs for the first time are Tampa Fla and three Kentucky counties that border southern Ohio Programs which have been running for longer periods are beginning to show their effec tiveness IMPROVEMENTS New Jersey the first state to require emissions checks for all vehicles reports 13 per cent improvement in ambient car bon monoxide readings since the program began Similar success has been reported by Oregon where the Portland area has enjoyed carbon monoxide reduction of 14 per cent and hydrocarbon reduc tion of per cent during its first inspectioppycle oil change if it is time Hold the air filter up to the light and replace it if its clogged Check and replace windshield wipers if they are not clearing windows properly Fill the windshieldwasher reservoirs with an antifreeze solution Spray shot of dry lubricant onto the door latches and around the rubber casings to keepthem from freezing up Check the frontend align ment by observing how the car holds it direction Poor align ment can cause steering dif ficulty on slippery roads as well as premature tire wear Check lights defroster and heater to see if they are work ing properly Examine the ex haust system and muffler for possible carbon monoxide leaks Finally the Automotive In formation Council recommends you put scraper in the glove box and emergency equipment in the trunk of your car You might consider shovel emergency flares and bucket of sand salt or an old rug to use for traction in case you get stuck Chicagos version of the underworld froze over last winter and provided no exit for motorists who were trapped in cartop depths of snow While no one can tell where winters most severe blows will fall in the next few mon ths getting your car prepared for whatever happens is the wisest action any motorist can take CALLING ALL CARS ll New Moiocrafl
