series By STEPHEN GALER Of The Examiner The Entresix Dance Company modern dance ensemble from Montreal opened the 197980 Barrie Concert Associa tion season Monday night at Georgian College The dance ensemble performed three works marked by imaginative choreography by artistic director Lawrence Gradus and spirited performances by the seven young dancers who make up the ensemble Two of the three dance pieces Nonetto and Excursions were dance improvisations that stressed movement and form rather than narrative line Gradus takes an athletic approach to choreography in these works demanding dif ficult jumps spins and twists from his dancers But occasionally the movements of the dancers are literal interpretations of the music In Excursions with energetic choreography to music by Benjamin Britten the dancers often conveyed the feeling of the music with descriptive mo Vallianatos and Marcia Wilson Miss Doane was gold medal winner at this years CNE music festival the pianists were prize never simpleminded CREATE MIRROR IMAGES Many of the movements in Nonetto created mirror im ages In the first two sections of the work both in the form of pas de deux one playful and the other dramatically erotic the dancers create these mirror images with tremendous grace and skill The movements sometimes resemble gym nastics or acrobatics and its this creative athleticism that makes the dancers so appealing visually Peter and the Wolf the third work on the program is choreographed childrens tale that blends narration music and dance into one satisfying whole The dancers portray animals dressed in costumes that are often whimsical and humorous and the animals in turn are identified with specific instruments in the orchestra score Here are the lively enthusiasm of the young dancers br ings alive the special magic of modern dance The choreography is flexible enough to allow for few moments of slapstick as well as an effective dramatization of the storyline The dancers both in the solo and ensemble routines kept the story moving at lively pace Douglas Nakamoto as the wolf was particularly effective in protraying the evil character of the story LESS SENSITIVE Aside from Nakamoto the other three male dancers in the ensemble seemed less sensitive on the whole than the three female dancers in Entresix Peter and the Wolf sustained in terest because the strong story line and effective use of costumes and props complemented the choreography so well in the two interpretive works there were moments of awkwardness when the level of concentration seemed to drop and the dancers were going through the motions of the choreography rather than creating mood and sense of physical beauty Notice Shopping Hours Our shops Will be open every Thursday and Friday evening
