Stranger Calls fat the Im perial 1i create the kind of suspense and terror that only the movies can give us Carol Kane as teenaged babysitter whos the victim of threatening phone calls from psychopathic killer calling her from inside the house But this opening sequence which first appeared on its own as 20minute short is almost too frightening for its own good because it promises more than the rest of the film can deliver The final 15 minutes of the film are just terrifying but in between When Stranger Calls meanders through long middle section that comes close to boring the viewer and deadening the imr pact of that opening sequence In this middle section set scvin yiars later Charles Durr ning plays private detective hired to track down the killer ilony Beckley after hes escaped from mental hospital Duinmg does lot of running and so does Beckley who looks like real psychopath recruited for the part ollcen Dewhurst becomes decoy tor the killer but even her aging earthy While quantities lat charm cant save this overlong poorly plotted portion of the film PICKS YP But the pace of When Stranger Calls dramatically when the film returns to Kane now married and the mother of two children Beckley decides to terrorize her again Kane is forced to relive nightmare of the opening se quencc and the audience once again gets the chance to be scared witless When Stranger Calls doesnt try to be particularly original or creative in its evoca tion of terror The films struc ture is suspiciously similar to that of John Carpenters Hallo ween and the camerawork is often sloppy and too obvious Director Fred Walton signals all his suspenseful scenes well in advange but its credit to his understanding of what scares an audience that When Stranger alls works as well as itdoes Kane whose palefaced ulnerability has typccast her in most previous films is the perfect choice for the terrorized babysittermother she looks as helpless as newborn puppy and that draws the viewer into the makes the stronger im pression The film almost dilutes the impact of his bloodlust by trying to create some sympathy for his psychopathic condition but Beckley fills the screen with haggard desperate
