his life Davids so obsessed with 10speed bicycle racing that he turns the Italians the best at the sport into romantic model for his own life He carries this so far he starts to speak Italian and sing operatic arias He even renames the family cat Fellini David is so caught up in the romance and excitement of the sport that he starts to think he really isltalian FALLS IN LOVE And when he falls in love with young Texan coed he uses his Italian personality to win her love Shes fascinated by his romantic courtship hes swept away by the fact that univer sity student will have anything to do with June The National Theatre School ters defend their honor That notion of honor provides the exciting climax of the film The university students are pit ted against the cutters in marathon bicycle race David and his friends enter as team and win proving to the town to Davids parents and most im portantly to themselves that theyre just as good as the university jocks who cruise around town in expensive sports cars LSES OM EDY Breaking Away is the kind of film that uses comedy to put across its ideas and this light handed approach that keeps the film from turning into ser mon The films viewpoint is strictly on the side of the cut ters but thats necessary to draw us into the particular pro blems they face Yates direction throughout the film is wellpaced and unob trusive The film moves with the easy grace of road racer Watching the race sequences you get an idea of what attracts David to the sport And watching Breaking Away you get an idea of how deftly an American director can handle the theme of class conflict Breaking Away is mostly about growing up in America its also about winn ing and losing and how young people deal with the conflicting expectations of the society they live in Best of all its film about real people with cast of unknowns whose performances are convincing from start to finish Important painter examined OTTAWA tCPl Artists can survive depression well enough because they have learned to live with it even in times of economic prosperity 0nce an artist has sold painting higher prices mean nothing to him or to his art but seeing his work move from one owner to another He makes nothing on the deal These and other hard truths about an artists life are from the voluminous and sometimes sardonic writings of one of Canadas foremost painters of the earlier days of this century David Milne who died in 1953 after long career much of it spent in solitude Path of His Own is new hourlong documentary on Milnes life produced and directed by Paul Caulfield and written and narrated by Pat Patterson in which Milne is played by actor Les Carlson It was given its first public showing Thursday night at the National Gallery and will be broadcast Oct 31 by the CBCTV network before going into art gallery and school film libraries as the record of man who carved out his own niche in Canadian art Milne was near contem porary of Emily Carr and Le Maine FitzGerald much in fluenced by the Group of Seven but an artist who did not join the group because of its strong nationalist viewpoint Milne believed firmly that art is bas ed on universal not national principles NOW WORTH TIIOLSANIS Born near Lake Huron at Paisley Ont and student of art in New York Milne enlisted in the Canadian Army and was an official artist in the First World War But he spent most of his life more than 50 years living in rural New York and Ontario hamlets or cabins alone in the bush developing distinctive style natural obstacle in his lone ly life was that he was far from any market for his art and had virtually no income from it un til he offered 1000 paintings to Vincent Massey at $5 each Massey wealthy scion of the farm implement manufacturer who later became New Yorkers cool to Canadian piece NEW YORK CPI Con ductor Mario Bernardi of the Ottawabased National Arts Centre Orchestra brought to Carnegie Hall on Friday night new Canadian work that was more strange than brilliant Bernardi may feel Delta triple concerto written by coin poser Michael Colgrass is real crowd pleaser This time howcvci it did not really fly with the New York audience Dclta does have momcnts of brilliance and melodies that are delightful But there are so many wcird sounds coming out ot nowhere that after while oitc begins to wonder where the Delta express is going to stop The work is so new and inod crii it probably will take while to adjust to its mixture of per cussion violin and clarinet sounds helped by the carefully nurtured music of the orches tra GREATER RESPONSE The hall responded more to the performance of guest soloist Kyungwha Chung South Korean violinist The audience of about 2000 was treated to vibrant and tender effort by Miss Chung performing Mendelssohns Vio lin Concerto in Minor The 46member orchestra celebrating its 10th an nivcrsary featured Delta as intergral part of its twohour program But the orchestras performance of Haydens Symphony in Major was better effort and one that was more appreciated EUSTOM INSTALLATION OF ANY MAKE CAR STEREO OR CB BY PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS WITH YEARS EXPERIENCE Authorized Dealer for Craig
