Bill Elson secretarytreasurer with the public utilities commission The new increase will follow the last hydro bike which was effective last month Elson told The Examiner today It will be the second increase in six months and the second in the past three years Elson said Elsons remarks come following an an nouncement Tuesday by the board of direc tors of Ontario Hydro that hydro charges to residential industrial and rural customers would take large jump in 19m Hydro Chairman Hugh Macaulay said in news release the effective increase to 334 municipal utilities which in turn sell elec tricity to consumers will be about 164 per cent to 101 direct customers such as large industries about 148 per cent and to about 77tiooo rural customers who get their elec announced for next year tricity directly frotii the utility about too per cent For example rural residential customer using 1000 kilowatt hours month and cur rently paying an average $3848 month will pay about $425 month more in 1980 Macaulav said the exact amount of the iii crease to urban horvc owners will have to be determined by the local utilities commission All local utilities have costs besides the purchase of power although that is the major one and of course they will have to take these into account in calculating their rates He said the increases would have been smaller under antiinflation guidelines which were in force during 1978 and 1979 when Hydro rebated about $250 million to our customers The increases under those guidelines would have been MB per cent to municipal utilities 71 per cent to large industries and 132 per cent to rural customers served directly by Hydro Short scouting trip ends in fiveday ordeal SIOIN LOOKOlT Ont CPI What began as short scouting trip for moose became
