Environment minister says Chemical dangers exist at wells By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner Chemical Petro Waste CPW Disposal Ltd of Barrie has been asked by the ministry of environment to hire hydrogeological consultant to further study the possibility of chemical contamination of private wells near the com panys Snow Valley Road waste transfer station in Vespra Township This was announced to Vespra Township council Mon day night in the form of letter from provincial environment minister Harry Parrott In his letter Parrott said the posSIbility of contamination of private wells as result of chemical spill which occurred at the station in June 1978 was continuing concern to his ministry monitoring program being carried out by the ministry in dicates the contamination is migrating north through the water table Parrott said but the rate and the extent of the migration cannot be determin ed with data currently available As result the minister said CPW has been asked to hire hydrogeological consultant ac ceptable to the ministry to con duct further work to determine the rate of migration and the likelihood of contamination of private wells ACCURATE ESTIMATE This additional information will allow for more accurate estimate of the possibility of well contamination Parrott said He assured council in his let ter that he personally was ex tremely concerned about the problem and intend to take all steps necessary should the spill result in contamination of private wells Jim Stewart manager of CPW told The Examiner Mon day the company has not yet chosen consultant but is in the process of receiving quotations for the cost of the operation Stewart said company of ficials will meet with represen tatives of the ministry Thurs day to evaluate the situation and lay out the groundwork for the testing The consensus quite frank ly is that there is no problem but we want to know exactly where we stand he said The issue of possible private well contamination among homes near the site arose last July whenmesidents on Snow Valley Road were notified of the spill and its potential hazard in letter from Dr David Korn Simcoe County medical officer of health Residents were told that the spill of about 35000 gallons of waste had occurred when the plastic liner ruptured in lagoon used for storage They were also assured by Dr Korn however that wells on monthly basis since the residents were notified He said migration of the chemicals through the water table has not occurred as far as 700 feet from the site so there is still long way to go before it reaches private wells There is currently no im mediate danger of contamina tion Gray said but the poten tial is difficult to estimate which is why we have asked for hydrogeologist We feel we have taken it as far as we should and the com pany should take it from this it Dave Wittick conducts the Eastview Concert choir during an evening practice Monday The choir which does lot of pop music park Each time snake is captured wardens map its point of capture and pomt of release Gibbs said the snakes may have greater range than he anticipated Three snakes were recaptured several kilometres from where they were earlier released MORE APTLRES NEEDED More captures are needed before conclusions may be drawn said Gibbs Parsons said he hopes in about two weeks to have an esimatc of the Massasauga population on Beausoleil Island The figure is based on tagging information fed into com uter Equipping rattlesnakes with transmitters will help wardens locate breeding areas and wintering snakes downtown turned out by the school this year some 54 have been can vassed and 10 of those are not working Seven of the 44 found to be working have gone to the US while four have taken jobs in other provinces The survey also shows that the job situation for new nurses is better this year than it has been in past years TOO MANY GRADS In 1975 the provinces nurs ing schools were turning out attempts to blast channel through the siltblocked section of the creek west of County Road 28 for threeday canoe trip at course in environmental with examining board policy DESTROYED HOMES fire started Sept 14 1812 by the Russians after the French occupation destroyed 30800 houses in Moscow Price said the blasting was intended to create an outlet 10 feet wide and five feet deep but while the first 1000 feet blasted satisfactorily the second 900 feet did not open up as well As result he said the resulting channel created in that section was only five feet wide and twoandahalf feet deep REDUCED LEVEL The result of the new outlet however has been to reduce the water level in the channel Price said and the townships engineers anticipate the area will soon be accessible to dredg ing machinery which can widen the channel as soon as it dries up sufficiently Price told The Examiner later that about 3500 feet of Willow Creek west of the county road needs to be cleared from silt and the project has been underway since August The silt problem which has been compounding over several years creates an annual flooding problem in the spring for farmers in the area he said as well as during heavy sum mer rains The constant infill of silt reduced the flow of the creek so much that farmers and the township were forced to build several drains to divert the GLENN PRICE since August flood water from farmland Price said The purpose of the project he said is to reestablish Willow Creek along its original path and take the burden off the manmade water courses and the municipal drains INSPECTION TRIP Price also told council an in spection trip along the creek to the Nottawasaga River reveal ed that beaver dams had been further complicating the pro blem of flow in the creek These had been successfully removed by hand he said but because the animals will start rebuilding almost immediate ly and because the flow of silt from the creeks source is im possible to stop maintenance should be carried out on the creek every three to five years If we treat these as maintenance problems we will be protecting the investment we have already made he told council The project which is two thirds funded by the ministry of natural resources and onethird by the township has cost about $11557 so far Rescue squad lnnisfil officials to meet soon By NANCY FIGUEROA Of The Examiner joint meeting will be held shortly between the lnnisfil police and fire departments and the Simcoe Rescue Squad The meeting an information session will enable all groups to see the equipment each group has said Chris Chap man squad spokesman The groups are anxious to be able to work together in emergencies to the best of their abilities and knowing the equipment each group has will aid them in doing so he said In August Fire Chief Doug Rose called for strong ground rules for the squads operation in the township Chapman said however that discussions between the departments have led to greater understanding of the way the squad operates Concern had been expressed that the squad was in the township when they were not reuired To avoid any misunderstandings the squad is now contacting the police and fire departments whenever the squad vehicle is in the township Sometimes the vehicle is in the township only because it is being manned an oncall squad member from lnnisfil From now on however the police and fire departments will be told whenever an In nisfil squad member has the vehicle on call Theyll know why were down there said Chapman Hines choice for authority Steve Hines will
