for elementary schools In the front row left to right Cathy Heather Examiner sports writer lot of people have asked me if Ive had any trouble on the sports beat because happen to be woman As matter of fact havent But then again havent really come up against situation such as trying to get into mens locker room where my sex might create bit of controversy As far as Im concerned the whole affair about women be ing allowed in mens locker rooms has been blown out of pro portion The issue received lot of publicity when Sports Illustrated woman sportswriter complained about difficulty writing story when she wasnt allowed into major league baseball teams locker room Since that time some teams have changed their rules and allowed women reporters in Other teams have made ad justments such as having team associate stand outside the locker room and fetch any player particular woman reporter wished to interview Others have arranged separate interview rooms for all interviews And still others steadfastly refuse to open the door to any women This is especially true in professional football where coaches such as the Dallas Cowboys Tom Landry insists on men only in the locker room and maintains that no woman shall ever darken the Cowboys locker room doorstep Of course Lan dry also still wears fedora which tells you just about how in tune with the times he is WHY THE FlSS really cant see why there is such fuss If were cover ing team such as the Toronto Blue Jay and wanted to speak to one or two players following game if the dressing room was open to women reporters then would go in not to view the athleticIooking bodies but to do my job If players are against women entering their domain because they are often in state of semidress after the game dont think there would be much problem for them to cover up while the intruders carried on with their jobs But actually Id prefer situation where player wished to speak with would come out of the dressing room be interviewed where both he and would not be preoccupied with the surroun dings and then with my copy hot in hand could race off to meet deadline problem many women yes and men sportswriters are constantly faced with are Kelly Hitz Matt Bastien and Mary Coutts In the back row left to right are Mandy Drought Bobby Twiss John Mercer Angelic Twiss and Peaches Petrie Examiner Photo Woman in mans world fittfittyfit FOOTBALL FAN Ever since can remember Ive been football fan Ive always followed the teams on Canadian and National Foooball leagues and also maintained an interest in local football such as my high school or university teams Slowly but surely find that my enthusiasm over football is being dampened Two things are behind this change in feeling One is reading many reports about the violence in the professional leagues The other is first hand experience dont mean playing but mean being on the sidelines while game is in progress Last week was shooting some pictures of senior high school football game between Collingwood and North Col legiate happened to be standing on the side where the two teams were because it was better for pictures and also needed to get the lineups of the two teams for identification While was not surprised to hear some of the comments be ing made on the sidelines by both players and coaches was not pleased to hear instructions like the following given by the Collingwood coaches You see green sweather and you censored hit himyou censored kill any green sweater you seejust get out there and censored hit any green sweather Now Im not saying that the Collingwood coaches are any different or the same as other high school coaches but Im just repeating although in censored version some of the comments heard Perhaps they may have not been said ifI had identified myself to the team but standing there snapp ing pictures feel that it wasnt hard to guess what was do ing there ENCOURAGES BODY CONTACT realize that football is game that encourages body con tact and hitting as part of the game The thing object to is the coaches telling the players still at high school age to kill Of course they dont mean it seriously hope but at that age player is anxious to please the coach Evidently some of them are going out and hitting hard hard enough for many high schools in Toronto to stop their football programs all together because of the high number of injuries The attitude that players learn in high school and college carries on into the pro leagues Except in the professional leagues the kill them approach is worsened by drugs and some of the players get somewhat overly keen to get at given opposing player often the quarterback How much damage must be done before they start using body contact in way thats good for the game Many Barrie natives competing in NHL By KEN WALLS The National Hockey League schedule is nicely in pro gress so we thought we would give some local background to players coaches and general managers in the league First of all lets write about Daniel Charles Maloney best known to Toronto Maple Laf fans as Dan Dan started the game here in minor hockey and had brief Jr fling with Toronto Marlboros farm club before fellow Barrie native Bill Long grabbed him for his London Major Jr Knights Maloney was on line there with Leaf captain Darryl Sit tler He was drafted by the Chicago Hawks in June 1970 and had coach of Colorado Rockies spent two seasons on defence for the Barrie Flyers in the days of Hap Emms great Major Junior teams Barrie fans of somewhat older vintage remain interested in Cherry especially after his record with Boston Bruins over four seasons 188 wins 50 ties 82 losses Last season his Bruins came close to upsetting Montreal Canadiens in the semi finals of the Stanley Cup playoffs Cherrys pro play was mainly in the minor leagues American Eastern Central Western but he did make the Boston defence for one playoff season Robert Jesse Pulford general manager of the Chicago Black Hawks was born at Newton Robinson in Tecumseth Township In his early hockey playing days Bob played for oronto Marlboros in Jr and then had 14 seasons with the Leafs before being traded to LA He is recognized as one of the hardestworking centres and left wingers to every play in the NHL Pulford last played for Kings where he was captain Kings trained at the Barrie Arena for two seasons 1968 and 1969 Pulford was named coach of the year in 197475 for his fine effort in Chicago James Earl Rutherford is one of the goalies for the Detroit Red Wings and was born in the same township as Pulford Tecumseth Township Mike Gartner rookie with Washington Capitals is native of the Barrie area His major junior time was spent with the Niagara Falls Flyers He jumped to Cincinnati Stingers of the World Hockey Association but was drafted this year in the NHLWHA merger by Capitals Rob Garner who plays for Pittsburgh Penguins is native of Barrie and the son of Robert Garner He was star centre for Barries famous oung team the Coops who won the Midget title in Cana and faced the Soviets in Moscow in 1975 where they were successful Garner played with Toronto Marlboros and was taken by Pittsburgh in the Junior draft last year Others in the NHL who played some minor hockey in Bar rie although they are not Barrie natives include Doug Risebrough of Montreal Canadiens Jack Lynch of Washington and Bill Stewart of Buffalo Barrie also has referee in the NHL Ron Hoggarth Contestingjfles The series of the mCInO BALTIMORE AP The outcome of the World Series re mains in doubt but one thing has become
