The Reverend Ernest Nullmeyer centre shows the withered seed potato exemplifying the dying of ones old self to new self to the Reverend Fritz of Collier Street United Church left and the Reverend Arthur Storey of Grace United Church The occasion was marked by lunch given by Collier Street United Church men with the proceeds going towards the building fund for the new Grace United Church sanctuary Speaks on attributes Of man alive By BRIAN BAKER BARBIE mens lunch was given by the men of Col her Street United Church recently with the proceeds being doubled and given towards the building fund of Grace United Church on Grove Street East which is well on the way to com pleting its new sanctuary Guest speaker was Bar ries Reverend Ernest Mullmeyer who spoke on the attributes of man alive and how one must die to ones old self to live it Jesus To stress this point he took out withered and blackened piece of material and asked what it was Nobody knew It was quarter piece of potato that had been planted last spring In dying to itself it ha produced seven large beautiful potatoes Jesus said If you want to find your life go out and lose it said Mr Nullmeyer Jesus said He who cannot die in me cannot live in me Except that the grain of wheat falls into the ground and dies to itself it abides alone In mans society he went on the way to go up is to live it up In Gods Kingdom the only way to go up is to go down to die to your old self GREAT MAN He described John Vanier son of the former Governor General of Canada as one of the greatest men living on earth because in effect he died to his fathers wealth and fame died to his educa tion died to the great name of Vanier to devote his life to working with the mentally retarded and other worth By DOROTHY KILBURN privilege that was mine recently was to hear devo tional given by Mrs Maybeth Gray at Stroud When she was about to share prayer which she often prayed in the morning on awakening wondered what that prayer would bel thought that it would go something like this Lord bless all that do to day or Lord make me blessing to others today But when she shared her prayer thought it to be the most unusual prayer that had ever heard It was Lord cause me to be joy to you today That prayer is different because it focuses on how we affect God not on how He af OTTAWA CF Can Le and few Buddhist friends are try ing to meet what he says is an urgent spiritual need among the growing number of Viet namese refugees in Ottawa Rev Wing Mak of the Chinese United Church and other Chinese Christian leaders also find strong social and spiritual needs among the while causes Like Jesus who washed the feet of men he serves the people hum ble ordinary without con ceit yet with great con fidence To be truly man alive he explained person must be lowly loyal and loving To accent the point of loyalty he told the following true story An interviewer asked the two sons of one of Canadas greatest hockey players Gordie Howe if they had ever been tempted to indulge in alcohol or drugtaking Yes Sir they replied We are like any other young peo ple who have lots of money and popularity but one thing we have never forgotten is that Howe is an honored name We wouldnt want to do anything to hurt our fathers name Taking light break Mr Nullmeyer told little story about the minister who step ped on tack half way through the sermon after the custodian had installed new piece of carpet The minister completed his sermon in agony After the service he thanked the custodian for the carpet but also mentioned the distressing incident Well Reverend replied Henry the custodian reckon that was one point you did not linger too long on ATTRIBUTE Love is the third attribute of man alive as said by Jesus By this shall you be known as my disciples if you have love one for another man alive is one who is not afraid to share to risk Paints tO Ponder You sheep of His fold tects us by giving or withholding blessing The thought that we can bring joy to God is verified in the scrip ture which says Ye shall be peculiar treasure to Me Exodus 195 Now treasure is something that we cherish and guard because it gives us joy and satisfaction treasure is also something for which we have paid an exceedingly high price mother cherishes her baby because it has cost her high price in pain and suffering young girl cherishes her cost ly diamond ring because it is token of love it is her treasure We are Gods treasure because He has paid refugees and are gearing their church programs to meet them Vietnamese Buddhists want place where they can worship but there is no Buddhist temple in Ottawa Le said in recent inter view So the Ottawa public servant is busy trying to find temporary home for Buddhist temple or pagoda Refugees with Christian Sam Dalton One of North Americas most wanted speakers who goes from coast to coast with the simple powerful message of Jesus Christ which Sam puts forth in his own unique humorous indepth way Sam is iust straw piece of clay used of God to tell it like it isa beautiful breath of fresh air Guest Speaker at Full Gospel Business Mens Banquet attho Continental Inn Nov 12th at pm at Root Gardens Banquet Tickets $800 PHONE 7285379 opening up his emotions to show kindness and affection toward his family and everyone around him Mr Nullmeyer pointed out that lot of men today are hurting inside because they are afraid to open up simply because they are afraid they will die to the big bravo im age He likened it to going to the dentist with painful dental problem and then not open ing up to let the dentist in to alleviate the problem Once successful ex ecutive and his wife on the brink of divorce came to him for counselling They sat at opposite sides of the room After while Mr Nullmeyer suggested they sit closer together much closer so that he did not have to keep turning his head Gradually the hostility melted conver sation became less argumen tative Finally the husband who had been the worst holdout reached and took his wifes hand in his and both broke down and cried unashamedly Today their marriage is stronger than it had ever been in the previous 24years Go home urged Mr Nullmeyer and open up to your family first Reach out to your wife and your children with warm hand and heart Reach out to the rest of your family to your neighbors and to everyone you meet To become alive in Jesus and to those around us is to become alive to ourselves It is great exer cise great experience an exorbitantly high price in order that we might belong to Him That price was His Son spotless holy dying upon cross suspended by nail pierced hands taking our place as Man and suffering the punishment deserved by us in order that we might be forgiven Today we often hear about folks asking the question Who am The truly born again Christian should never have to struggle with this question for the word of God tells us that the one who has accepted
