simple Cabaret shows have proven au dience appeal in Barrie and the Players have built up com pany of talent both onstage and off that has the skill and enthusiasm to put on terrific show Choreographer Claude Emond musical director Marilyn Campbell and Director Nick Schols have put together show that covers four dozen tunes from the turn of the cen tury to the 1970s And the 15 members of the cast go through their paces with the kind of spirit that makes up for any weaknesses in singing or danc mg Jenny GowenRees who com piled the material for the show also put together Bottoms Up the 1978 cabaret show But this Susan Crawford and Rob Townsend in Copa Banana they make the special magic of cabaret theatre come alive Photo courtesy of ProColor Heres dollar off your years version is much stronger visually with excellent costumes and lighting system that does justice to the per formers The only weakness was sound system that occa sionally tattered losing some of the solo numbers SINGS WELL Bob Townsend the star of last years show once again proves why hes the best male musical theatre performer in the city Townsend sings well Dancer stops court action TORONTO CP dancer who sued The Globe and Mail for libel because of concert review has agreed to withdraw her suit after two days in court on the condition that each party pays its own costs Willy Blok Hansen 63 had said 1976 review defamed her by suggesting she exploited God for personal advantage Miss Hansen told the Ontario Supreme Court jury Tuesday that she gave the dance concert to show the history of dance and Photograph Services and moves on stage with the poise of professional whether playing the passionate Romeo in campy sendup of Its Now or Never or pulling out all the stops for passionate version of Maybe This Time And when Townsend teams up with Susan Crawford in numbers like Little Things Mean Lot and You Dont Br ing Me Flowers Anymore the special magic of cabaret theatre comes alive Crawford making her first appearance in Littles Hills production is talented performer with great deal of promise Her voice is sweet and sexy her movements onstage always confident and graceful shes an important discovery for the Players and one who gives Copa Banana some of its best musical moments MIXES MOODS This cabaret show works because it mixes moods and tempos well Theres some fine comic touches in solos by Jane Dryborough singing an angelic song about Gabriels sister and by Nick Schols who dons kilt to perform Scottish novelty song called Marian McDonald The ensemble numbers are bright and lively and range from CanCan chorus line to jitterbugging Bandstand Boogie to marching rendition of In the Navy The different musical and dancing styles give the show enough variety to hold the audiences interest and the choreography is often inventive and always effective At its best show like Copa Banana pulls together music dance and comedy into for mat thats irresistible Add professionalquality costumes designed by Claude Emond and strong instrumental back ing courtesy of Marilyn Camp bell and threepiece band and the results are even more impressive Best of all add two strong performers like Town send and Miss Crawford and the audience is bound to beat path to your door In the case of Copa Banana which ends Saturday night audiences have done exactly that 00 next
