Will tell whether it is series that will be written about and talk ed about in years to come Although Baltimore and Pitt sburgh have met previously in the World Series they have been involved in other World Series games that were ex citing and unusual In 1969 Baltimore faced the New York Mets and the sur prise was that the Mets were in the series that year They were one of the saddest teams in baseball with the excep tion of the Blue Jays maybe from 1962 when they were created to 1969 when the turned the major leagues corn pletely upside down Just the year before the Shea Stadium misfits had escaped the cellar by one game The perennial ninth or tenth place team had suddenly solidified under Manager Gil Hodges and amazingly enough won the Na tional League pennant Baltimores American League champions were not im pressed and naturally almost everyone predicted Baltimore sweep This seemed to be reasonable prediction after Mike Cuellar wiped out the Mets and Tom Seaver in the first game 41 UNLIKELY HERO However in game two substitute utility infielder named Al Weis who was batting 215 cracked single to drive home the first Mets win The third game belonged to Tom mie Agee who as the first batter hit home run to put the The New Yorkers added four more and won 50 but not before Agee made two fantastic catches in centre field With two on and two out Agee raced after an Elrod Hendricks drive that would have hit the wall at the 396 foot mark and managed to snare it in his webbing In the seventh inning he made diving catch to stop line drive with the bases load ed The next day it was Ron Swobodas turn to make the div ing save in the ninth inning to stop Baltimore rally and the Mets won the game 21 in the bottom of the mm In the fifth and final game with the Orioles leading 32 in the seventh Al Weis popped homer into the left field stands to tie the game In the eighth Swoboda drove in the winning run and later scored himself on Boog Powell er ror The amazing Mets had completed minor miracle Maybe theres hope for the Blue Jays yet In 1960 the Pirates were involved in World Series which went all the way to the ninth inning of the seventh game before the outcome was decided Pittsburgh was up against the New York Yankees that year and New York had won three of the first six games by the onesided Scores of 103 100 and 120 The Pirates had won the other three games by more modest margins 64 32 and 52 DECIDING GAME So the deciding game of the series was played in Pitt sburgh and after 712 innings New York had 74 lead Gino Cimoli opened the bottom of the eighth with pinch single and then Bill Virdon followed with what should have been certain double play grounder But the ball took crazy bounce and hit Tony Kubek in the throat enabling Virdon to reach base on the single Then Dick Groat singled for one run and Roberto Clemente beat out an infield hit for another To top it off reserve catcher Hal Smith ripped threerun homer and the Pirates led 97 with only three outs left for the Yankees AUTOSOUND CUSTOM INSTALLATION OF ANY MAKE CAR STEREO 0R CB BY PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS WITH YEARS EXPERIENCE Authorixed Dealer for Craig Audiovox DUNLOP ST
