Series after taking Reds PITTSBURGH AP The story of Pittsburgh Pirates drive to their first National League pennant in eight years was best told by an inscription painted atop their dugout in letters almost as large as the dugout roof The Family This was baseball team of togetherness that won the East Division and went on to sweep the leagues bestoffive game championship series The Pi rates wrapped it up Friday with 71 triumph over Cincinnati Reds who had on the West Captain Willie Stargell the 38yearold first baseman known to his teammates as Pops smashed home run and double drove in three runs and got the series most valuableplayer award But Stargell accepted the huge trophy as symbol of 25 man victory He was proud of the honor but almost embarr rassed at being the recipient We do have unique family here said Stargell his eyes wet from tears and his voice choking little as he tried to express hisfeelings Im just proud very proud he said hugging his 11 yearold son This was pure indication of guys wanting to play ball as best they possibly can feel fortunate to be part of this devastating ball club The Pirates won the deciding game behind the eighthit nine strikeout pitching of Bert Blyle ven The triumph sent manager Chuck Tanners NL champions into the World Series against the American League winner starting Tuesday night in the AL city EARLY OFFENCE Pittsburgh put away Cincin nati early scoring runs in the first two innings off Reds starter Mike LaCoss In the first Omar Moreno walked stole second took third on fielders choice and scored on Dave Parkers sacrifice fly Phil Garner led off the second with triple the ball bouncing over the head of rightfielder Dave Collins He came home on sacrifice fly by Tim Foli LaCoss who appeared tight lipped and feeling the pressure even while dressing before the game lasted just 123 innings He walked four in his short tour But thc Reds still had chance get back in the game in the third off Blyleven who completed only four of 37 starts in the regular season They had runners at first and third with two out in the third on singles by Collins and Dave Con cepcron That brought up George Foster one of the leagues premier power hitters Blyleven went to 22 on Foster and then struck him out ending the inning The pitch also ended the day for the Reds except for Johnny Benchs sixthinning home run after the score was 60 Blyleven who relaxed before the game playing solitaire on the floor in front of his locker said he pitched with positive attitude couldnt get my curve over early but had good fast ball said the righthander who was 125 in the regular season Then in the second inning started to get my curve over After the second had good command HAS TANNERS VOTE Tanner was ebullient about Stargells performance Old Willies like fine wine he just keeps getting better with age the manager said Hes not only the MVP in this series but in the league Angels heard on high rally to win over Orioles ANAHEIM Calif AP The sign on the Anaheim Sta dium facade was reminder that Angels Work Miracles And former president Richard Nixon waved pregame suggestion to Never Give Up It took about three hours but alifornia Angels refused to give up and worked ninthin ning miracle that kept them alive in the American League championship series On the verge of being swcpt three straight the Angels ral lied for two runs to edge Baltir more Orioles 43 and sent the bestoffive playoff into this afterntxuis fourth game Rod arcw one of baseballs best hitters launched the win hing rally with oneout double and escaped possible base running blunder which would Iiave sent the Orioles into next weeks World Series against Pittsburgh Pirates Instead arew scored the ing run when Baltimore centre fielder Al Bumbry dropped sinking onerout liner off the hat of Bobby lrich Then Brian Downing who had walked fol lowing arews double scored on bloop double by Larry llarlow RE RELIEVE saw where Bumbry was playing and lrichs ball was sinking so just took oft said relieved arewx It carried lot better than thought it would was lead duck if he catches the ball crowd of 43199 thirdlarg est in Angels history cheered wildly when Carew escaped the goats horns Then it went into frenzy when Harlow delivered his gamewinner off reliever Don Stanhouse have lot of faith in this club said California manager Jim Fregosi who had predicted three straight victories at home after losing the first two games of the series in Baltimore Whatever this club does never surprises me Bumbry who tripled in the seventh and scored on pinch single to put the Orioles ahead 32 was disconsolate after the game The ball hit off the heel of my glove he said thought had good chance to get it and should have caught it got to the ball kneehigh Even if the ball had fell in front of me probably would have gotten the guy Downing going to second anyway But couldnt find it right away If had caught the ball its all over The Angels expansion team involved in its first post season competition took lead in the first on runsoring single by Dan Ford and went ahead 21 in the fourth on Don Baylors home run IIASE TANANA Baltimore in record sixth playoff pulled into tie on Lee Mays RBI single in the fourth and chased starter Frank Tanana when Doug Ietiiices sacrifice fly off is uu Up and racing winner Don Aase forged 22 deadlock But the Orioles left the bases loaded in the fourth and with the bases loaded in the sixth California centrefielder Rick Miller caught relatively shal low fly off the bat of Rich Dauer and threw Eddie Murray out at the plate Dauer turned basesloaded double play after fielding Fords hopper in the fifth play which seemed to finish the Angels Dennis Martinez who had lost eight of his last nine decisions and at 1516 the only Baltimore pitcher with losing record retired the next 10 batters in row after the twin killing But he was lifted im mediately after Carews ninth inning double as Baltimore manager Earl Weaver brought in Stanhouse who had won the iiiinning first game and saved 98 thriller with great dif ficulty in game No2 Stanhouse has been the man and maybe hell be again to morrow so had to go with him said Weaver Hes the big reason were here But no one will know for sure if Marti nez was tiring Baylor said the Orioles may have been overconfident and were packing their bags to go home in the eighth inning We got past Jim Palmer and Mike Flanagan he said so now we can work on the rest of their pitching staff Gilies Villeneuve of Canada is carried to his 3l2T4 by
