JMote needs hel to start festival By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner Al Mote needs some help Mote is the regional coordinator for the Georgian Bay Regional Stage Band Festival to be held in Barrie next March the first ever in this area and he needs some support to get the festival going Su rt in this case means money not lot of money but emu to cover some of the expenses involved in putting on the festival Mote is volunteering his time and his energy to organize festival that should attract young musicians from throughout the county Jazz music is important to Mote and just as important is his desire to spread the gospel to young people Stage bands arent an important part of music programs offered in Simcoe County and thats unfortunate for the stu dent musicians who enjoya playing big band music Elsewhere in Canada stage nd programs offer students chance to master the skills needed to play jazz The organizing body for student stage ands in ths count is the Canadian Stage Band Festival which has its hea quarters in Toronto Next year the 17 regional stage band festivals are expected to involve between 16000 and 20000 young people between the ages of 14 and 19 Festivals will be held in larger centres like Toronto Edmonton Montreal Calgary Halifax Vancouver and Ottawa as well as smaller cities like Barrie Peterborough Kelowna and Welland COMPETE IN MAY Winners at the regional level go on to compete in the na tional stage band festival to be held at the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa in May Winners of the national finals represent the best of the more than 800 stage bands jazz combos and jazz choirs who take part in the various levels of competi tion So while stage band music is still strugg ding in jazz the excitement and sense of creative expression they used to find in rock music And the jazz students graduating from community college programs like the one offered at Humber College in Toronto have the training and experience required to become firstclass Barrie through the fforts of Al Mote leader of the Barrie Stage Band and Bob Richmond of the Canadian Stage Band Festival The morning sessions will be devoted to choral reading and reading sessions for concert bands and stage bands scheduled performers include the Toronto Concert Singers and on of the finalists from the 1979 Canadian Stage Band Festival The concert band from North Collegiate
