province will not build French secondary school at Penetanguishene due to economic pressures brought on by declining enrolments However she maintained new policy paper on language rights developed because of the local issue will result in both im provements to and expansion of French language instruction provincewide Unimpressed and angry spokesman for the French community labelled her action unacceptable Raymond Desrochers co ordinator of the campaign to have school built said it is evident Dr Stephenson does not understand the complexity of the issue The minister told The Examiner following threehour session at the Simcoe County Board of Education building Barrie that the province sees one community in which two languages are spoken Yet it is clear that the French believe two distinct communities ex ist within one town She doesnt understand if she thinks shc Forces battle auto blaze By STEPHEN NICHOLLS Of The Examiner Even the army couldnt save Walter Heers Volkswagen from burning to the ground as it sat on the shoulder of County Road 10 Thurs day night The 32yearold Angus mans car burst into flames as he was driving north on the road about 10 km north of Angus at 730 pm Canadian Forces convoy driving behind Heer stopped and tried to save the car with fire extinguishers When the armed forces personnel were un successful police and Sunnidale Township firefighters were called Heer told police he heard bang while driving along the road When he glanced in his rearview mirror he saw flames coming from the rear engine compartment of his 1967 Volkswagen By the time he parked his car on the road shoulder fire had spread into the backseat passenger area Stayner OPP said when police and firefighters arrived the car was large ball of flames The car had full tank of THOMAS Of The Examiner total of 1500 hunters have been selected so far for the first managed deer hunt in Sim coe County following lottery by the Ministry of Natural Resources Thursday Pat Hogan enforcement coordinator for the ministrys Huronia district said Friday this number represents those who were suc cessful in being allotted to their first choice of the seven units into which the county has been divided for the hunt Hogan said those who were not chosen dur ing the draw will still have chance to hunt providing the unit listed as their second choice is one which still has available space He said of the remaining hunters who have applied about 200 will be successfully placed in their second choice unit but there will still be 300 or 400who will not be picked at all Because of the high number the ministry probably will not have to hold second lot tery as had been anticipated he said and it will simply be matter of going through the applications again and feed the successful se cond choice hunters into the vacant units All hunters have not made second choices in vacant unit and we know we are going to have units which wont be full Hogan said Pope returns to big The Examiner John Lawford the Angus man who plan ned to climb the CN Tower 17 times to raise money for the Barrie and District finified Way may have set his sights too CN Tower officials say Lawford couldnt possibly climb the tower 17 times in one day because on the day of the climb Oct 20 the tower will only be open from am to pm Lawford says he will need about 12 hours to complete the trip and had told The Examiner he would start his journey at6am But as far as tower officials are con cerned Lawford will start his journey at am just like all other participants in the Walk to The Top The Walk which climbers pay $3 for an opportunity to climb the 1760 steps of the tower is pro motion organized by the Toronto Region United Way to raise money for the region Lawford proposed walking the steps 17 times and having people sponsor him for each walk The money would then be given to the Barrie and District United Way Lloyd Armstrong director of the Barrie and District United Way said Toronto United Way officials mightnt have ap proved of Lawford using their promotion to raise money for the Barrie and District United Way Armstrong said the issue will tie dor mant and he will not become involved in it until Lawford brings documented proof that his proposed climb to raise money for the Barrie and District United Way is ap proved by CN Tower Officials Disappointed that what could have been an excellent money raising project may never become reality Armstrong said It sure sounded good 59 as principal and classrooms but share other facilities with the school as whole But possibility of annexation mediation between Barrie and Innisfil is apparently not dead after all The Examiner has learned that Barrie council will have an incamera session Tues day with David Rotenberg with the ministry of intergovernmental affairs Rotenberg parliamentary assistant to minister Tom Wells will handle the mediation question The session is an informal one Rotenberg said today We are dealing with procedure to find solution he said General committee recommended earlier in the week to forgo mediation at closed meeting Rotenberg asked for the session with council following the committee dem sion Barrie Mayor Ross Archer said today It is not known whether Barrie council will reverse its decision For that to happen Rotenberg will have to come up with some answers says Mayor Archer There is strong feeling from city council that the provincial government has left Bar rie out to dry the mayor said The city has now entered snag and the province seems to be saying forget what about decer tification of their union few days after the United Steelworkers of America went on strike Describing himself as people person who likes to talk Jack Morton MacDonald former RCMP officer and owner of Cavalier Intelligence and Protective Services Ltd said he told pickets several times that non striking union members had applied for decertification He said pickets brought up the topic saying they were afraid they the company were going to throw the union out There were lot of rumors flying and MacDonald would listen or talk about it when the subject was brought up he said MacDonald was testifying at an Ontario Labor Relations Board hearing into charges that Radio Shack failed to bargain in good faith during first contract negotiations with ibocetantpmgemz the newlyformed USWA of shorefront property from Canadian National Railways As result Barrie officials will meet with CN officials Oct 15 in session set up by Ron Stewart MPSimcoe South The property is located at the southern por tion of the city directly across from Gowan Street Mayor Ross Archer told The Ex aminer Thursday The city wants to see what plans the railway company has with the property with the citys intent being to acquire it said the mayor There are number of things which Good God Its doing my job 3s could be done with the property Mayor Ar cher said The citys marina is rapidly filling up and it could prove to be an extension of those facilities said the mayor SPORTS CENTRE PROPOSAL In addition the land could be used as recreational facility said the mayor ma jor sports centre has been proposed by steering committee looking into the matter The downtown area has been proposed as possible location for that centre Neither the purchase price or what could be done with the land is known at this time Before any decision is reached it will be referred back to Barrie city council for decision the mayor said However the mayor said an exchange of land is possibility General committee
