taken to the football field 55 times On only one of those occasions were the Redskins on the wrong end of the final score The one loss came at the hands of Markham in the CBSSA final two years ago During these glory years in Central football two men have coached the team Dave Garland has handled the of fense while the defense has been run by Bruce Clark think our fine record is due mostly to the facts that we have two coaches with football backgrounds who work well together and that tradition for winning has been established here Garland said Rob Hall rover on defense and team captain said that coaching is definitely the main reason the team rarely loses that and team speed SMALL TEAM We are always the smaller team when we play Hall who has been senior for three years said We count on our speed to get the job done Garland said that size is not major factor when he and Clark decide on which players to keep Bruce and look for the best 24 athletes trying out Garland aid Ill take mobile smaller player overa bigger less mobile one every time Garland said he has sym pathy for the smaller players At It pounds he was fullback at Western University for five years think size is overrated by most coaches Garland said The coach said that the lack of size of the Central players over these winning years is TIM GLEASON top rusher main reason most of them have not gone on to college football Most university coaches cut player just on the basis of size he said One Central graduate Bill Little is standout college player playing on both the of fensive and defensive lines for Acadia University Stayner winning Stayner High School sports are off and running to pretty good start The Senior Girls basketball team posted win in their first season game against Central Seniors downing Central 4634 Stayner Seniors participated in the CCI tournament where they lost first round game 4025 to Hamilton defeated Meaford handily 4023 and then lost the consolation final 2624 toActon taking first with the best team score so far this season in Simcoe county Midget girls took third spot and Rick Dickey as the best finisher of all Stayner runners coming in second in the junior boys division HURRICANE COSTLY In 1972 Hurricane Agnes in the United States caused 122 deaths and more than $2 billion in propertv damage Central has some players in the lineug this year who could go on to igger things The top prospect is fullback Tim Gleason who has been burning defenses with his speed and power so far this year Central does not count on flasy football to get the job done The teams main ingre dients are stingy defense which only allowed 18 points all of last year and sound runn ing game led by Gleason So far this year Central has had little trouble In their three wins they have scored 112 points while yielding only nine This Friday they take on St Andrews of Aurora in an exhibi tion game That is traditionally one of the toughest games of the season for Central Next week they tackle Banting in league play Banting has looked im pressive so far in the young season Garland insists that although the team has the remarkable recordthey have had some very tough tussles in the past NOT CAKEWALKED We have not cakewalked to the championships he said In the playoffs we have had some very tough games but have managed to come out on top The offensive coach said that the Central athletes are not any better at the beginning then those at the other schools Some people have said that we get the best athletes at Cen tral Garland said dont think they are any better here than they are at Eastview or North its just that here 980 LAD ORDER YOURS the examiner Thunday Oct 1979 ROB HALL leads defense they have that winning tradi tion behind them and it makes them want to win and excel more Garland does try to insure that Central Collegiates best athletes try out for the team You have to do little recruiting within the school he said If know of good athlete want him on the team SHORE UP TEAM Garland was brought to Cen tral six years ago to shore up the football program Aside from playing for Western he also coached Westview Col legiate in Toronto That team took the impossible in football think we would hold our own against any team in the province Garland said When was at Westview coached Metropolitan West allstar team There were some good athletes on that team but think our kids could stay with them Last year the team was scheduled to play an exhibition game against Victoria Park one of Torontos best but it never materalized EXCELLENT APPRAISALS Garland also said that Gleason Hall and couple of others attended the Toronto Argonaut camp for high schoolers last spring and they received excellent appraisals However the excellence of Centrals football
