and Mindy 13 months ago some 45 million viewers im mediatey turned on to the an tics of zany comedian Robin Williams The ensuing avalan che of publicity catapulted Robin to new heights but un fortunately obliterated pretty costar Pam Dawber in the pro cess Eventually Dawber re bounded and asserted herself balking at the onesided hype and drawing some of the atten tion away from Robin HEAVY VIBRATIONS had been unhappy for while but they the producers are giving me more and more to do all the time From their point of view they didnt know what could do either Little by little they found out that could cry so they wrote me crying sequence Now Im really lear ning how to deliver jokes and be more relaxed The more show them what can do the more theyll give me beamed the blueeyed beauty as she snack ed on health food brunch in her favorite local cafe When asked if she expected such notoriety after failing to land several lead roles Tabitha series and the up coming Haywire miniseries Pam reflected ABC had seen my work before and liked me and also did pilot for Para mount tha didnt go anywhere But then they told me that as going to costar in Mork and Mindy must admit in the beginning thought the whole thing was kinda dumb especially since the title sound ed silly didnt know whether wanted to do it until it was all explained to me and until aw Robin perform Once we started knew it was gonna be ahit NIMNLI BUFFER And now with full years ex perience under her belt the Detroitborn Dawber who at one time was topnotch New York model sees herself as Illflfms NOW PLAYING NOW PLAYING PAM DAWBER learns to relax sort of buffer for the programs craziness We have to main tain the reality of the situation For instance if they made Min dy cartoon character and hired Gilda Badner instead of me it would still be funny show but it wouldnt be as fun ny because youd have no where else to come down to earth You need something to stabilize the show and this way you can realize how funny cer tain situations are But if you surround Robin with too many cartoontype characters then he Morki is not the unique hilarious one You cant have high comedy unless you have low stabilizer Dawber ex plained Even though Pam and Robin both have the standard five year series contracts there seems to be little chance of the show lasting that long Says Pam dont want to run it in to the ground think well get three years out of it and by then who knows Robin might want to make movies Any new TV series that do after this one would be step down DaWber intends to use her ex perience in trying to garner some movie roles in the future It gives you lot more power in that you can walk into an audition and have part of fered to you as opposed to 7269944 AT 7159IS satistaction guaranteed DOUBLE FEATURE AT If this one 702 docsnt rAvca EVBASSV vm co Iwuv hento cw before when you had to stand in line and hope you could even get chance to see the right people Working on and is the greatest acting class Ive ever bad My own growth in the series has been tremendous learning experience boasted Pam But like others before her shell have to fight for the real ly meaty roles simply because she has modelturnedactress stamped allover her Its true that many models whove tried to become actresses have gone wrong In modelling you have to be aware of how you look on the outside Theres tremen dous emphasis on the angles and you dont want to put your head up too high or too low Now if you do that in front of movie or TV camera youre gonna come across artifically You have to experience everything youre acting you cant fake it like in modelling Sometimes you can actually see some of these girls watching themselves on camera and nothing real is coming out of them Pam said Ive turned down many roles because they didnt have any substance she continued And one of the biggest disap pointments of my life was being rejected for the Haywire role But think Ill wait for some movies that have an interesting message Im looking for films that have the caliber of what Jane Fonda is doing the examiner Monday Oct 1019 Dawn of the Dead Wallows in violence but doesnt horrify By STEPHEN GALER Of The Examiner George Romeros Dawn of the Dead at the Bayfield Mall Cinema isnt the kind of horror movie that keeps you glued to the screen in suspense for two hours Dawn of the Dead is sil ly violent and often grotesque Romero who made something of name for himself with Night of the Living Dead is director who likes to pour blood on the screen and then rub the audiences nose in it The new movie continues the theme of the earlier one how human beings are changed into emotionless mindless zombies with strong appetities for warm human flesh The source of their affliction is never explain ed and its clear that even the armed forces of the US government cant handle the situation The entire country seems to be in panic except for all the happy hunters who find the zombies are great for target practice The movie focuses on four characters three men and woman who flee Philadel phia in helicopter and find refuge in huge shopping centre After clearing out the zombies attracted to the mall tooAvI nilliA THEATRES CIENE ibWESiST 326633 by memories of past shopping sprees the heroes settle in for long stay The mall supplies them with just about every comfort they could want in cluding expensive stereos gourmet food and threepiece suits SPEEDY EN This consumers paradise comes to speedy end when an army of motorcycle hoods ar rives on the scene littering the mall with the bulletridden bodies of zombies Our heroes put up strong fight and even tually flee to safety in the Actor loses helicopter The first halfhour of Dawn of the Dead is absurdly violent and sickenineg explicit We see shots of halfeaten bodies heads being shot off zombies destroyed in number of ways The blood flows in great red bursts on the screen the only possible way to respond to this is to become something of zombie yourself Its hard to fathom Romeros intentions here The film doesnt scare you and manages only feeble attempts at creating suspense The plot is 20 pounds for role in war drama Hal Holbrook has discovered yet another system for losing weight become an actor Holbrook lost 20 pounds in an upcoming starring role but he did it on purpose He stars as tortured emaciated POW in Vietnam lost the first 13 pounds in twoandahalf weeks and held my weight at 155 pounds when we started the film said the ADMIHANrf Iv Iltn tr Ai run In space no oer titan hearyou scream EVENING debatable how much symbolic significance can be read into the film too It the shopping centre symbol of modern societys preoccupation with consuming Do the zombies represent the overflow from hell as one character suggests or are they grotesque represen tations of contemporary man GUESSING GAMES Its too easy to play guessing games with director like Romero Some critics find mat meaning in his films find great indecency in this particular one not only is the subject matter replusive the technical quality of the film is poor with jerky editing and poor camerawork The acting by cast of
