RIEL By Janet Rosenstock and Dennis Adair Paperjacks $250 Reviewed by STEPHEN GAUER The CBCS Riel lives on As part of the promotion campaign for the $22 million historical drama broadcast this week 75000 copies of novelization of Roy Moores screenplay have been distributed across the country The novelization by Janet Rosenstock and Dennis Adair isnt good literature and it isnt good history it doesnt even match the standards for popular history established by Pierre Berton Like the TV drama the novel is sequence of episodes in the life of Louis Riel from his childhood in the 18505 through his assumption of Metis leader ship in the 18605 the years of exile the prairie rebellion and eventual execution for treason The books advantage over the TV drama is that secondary characters are introduced and identified in such way that the reader who isnt familiar with the Riel story can understand whats going on Riel is story of religious intrigue cultural integrity language rights political indif ference and lastly of human beings caught between two worlds write the authors in their introduction to the novel suggesting an epic dimension to the book that doesnt exist tltieli is above all story of dreams conflicting desires played out on the great stage of continental expansion during period of dramatic change Certainly the Riel story is dramatic one but its been told far better in much better books than this one Its also been told much more accurately without resorting to the composite characterizations distortions and inaccuracies that fill Riel By stripping the central character of troublesome con tradictions and ambiguities the book presents Riel as Metis knight in shining armor riding off into battle against the nasty English Canadians who are blind to the just grievances of the Metis people One historian has critized the Riel show for sanitizing and liberalizing the Metis leader its precisely this defication and simplificaton of Riel that makes the novel easy to read The chapters are short the pro se is perhaps notch above the junior high level and the pacing is fast enough to maintain interest despite the shallowness of the books approach This is the kind of book tha you read quickly and forget just as quwkly When characters are portrayed so simply so an critically theres no opportuni ty for the authors to create any kind of convincing historical at mosphere or texture in the novel Riel doesnt emerge as the complex and tragic prophet who articulated the hopes of the Metis people hes simply folk hero outlined in the broad strokes of caricature or car toon character Finally the book uses the dubious disclaimer that because history is fiction the inaccuracies and simplifica tions in Riel can be excused One hundred years of ana dian history have failed to come to terms with Louis Riel not because the man existed but because the issues he clash ed over with government still surround us His dream is still far from reality Riel is dedicated to all historians who know better than anyone that history is the greatest of all fic tions Books by bestselling writer examine people under stress NEW YORK AP Even in the heat of summer dinary situations what hap pens to people under stress Actually we all are extraor dinary people but we lead or dinary lives Now what try to do is show what happens to that ordinary guy when he is first forced to the uneasy then to the unpleasant and finally to some kind of lunacy In my work start with completely ordinary situation and push it little by little over the line Theres hem there of course but its up to the writer to sew that hem between the real and the unreal so that the reader isnt aware that hes moving from what could happen into what couldnt possibly happen King whose first major suc cess was Carrie says he thinks people btiy his books because they like to be scared Its no fun if you are really scared but it is fun when you can be scared by someone elses fear Pain is Hans Selye of Montreal is of course recognized world authority on the subject Selye discovered that stress on the job can and does bring on ulcers hypertension and even heart attacks that kill While Selye is the resident guru others have followed and expanded on his studies Prob ably the most successful is John Howard an associate profes sor in the School of Business at University of Western Ontario in London Howard has lectured and written extensively on stress and even Selye attrsts glow ingly to the way he and some of his university associates have added to its understanding Howard and two of his col leagues Dr David Cun ningham and Dr Peter Rechnitzer have produced slim easily read book entitled Rusting ut Burning ut Bowing Out INTERIM REPORT Howard describes the book as an interim report on the trios studies into managerial and professional stress While their approach is some what different than Sclyes they come to basically the same conclusions In final chapter they list number of dos and donts to avoid stress Which alone is worth the price of the book They conclude that change is the main cause of stress new job ambition the threat of personal obsolescence and so on Unless corrected they see harddriving workers or exch tives on collision course to the grave Exercise is deemed the best cure for stress While they agree that some stress is necessary and healthy they still present the reader with the dilemma how much is too much or how much is too little They use the example of fleas on dog reasonable num ber is good because it keeps the animal busy But what is reasonable number of fleas And when do interest and cxcitctiient become fear and distress leading to illness and failure This book should give most people pretty good idea Rusting Out Burning Out
