8A the examiner Friday Aprll13 1m off the record By LAWSON The Canadian Press Question Why is Side One of Chers new album Take Me Home like her Viking costume on the cover Answer Because theres not much to it On the other hand or more accurately on the other side Cher offers five finely crafted tunes that in effect redeem the record For the glamorous 32year old entertainer Take Me Home has been long time coming Since her TV variety show with former husband Sonny Bono disappeared from TV listings several years ago Cher has been relative stranger to the airwaves Any time she made headlines during the hiatus it was because of her romances or her forays to disco clubs and roller skating rinks not because of any great achievement In the entertainment business She regards the new album her first for fasablanca records as somewhat of com eback And the first side of Take Me Home suggests that her second coming is bound for the land of disco fever In way this detracts from the overall potential Always powerful singer her can be comfortable croon ing out soft ballads or coming alive with upbeat pop And even when she tries her hand at disco distinct type of popular music she spares not an ounce of energy But because so much of to days charted music is disco oriented the competition is fierce the artist must work hard to deliver something that is both fresh and memorable The disco tunes on Take Me Ilome despite the slick produc tion by Bob Esty are just or dinary OK for the dance floor but nothing special for the listener best selling albums 999NPPF9NT Toto Toto Spirits Having Flown Bee Gees last week Blondes Have More Fun Rod Stewart Dire Straits Dire Straits Minute by Minute Doobie Brothers Parallel Lines Blondie Breakfast In America Supertramp Van Halen ll Van Halen Go West Village People I0 Under Heaven Over Hell Streetheart listings supplied by Sams in Barrie The second side of the album is another matter Three of the cuts are ballads song style that fits Cher as neatly as her lavish costumes with able production on two tunes by Ron Dante One of the ballads My Song was cowritten by Cher with Mark Hudson The other two cuts are hearty upbeat numbers notably Git Down Guitar Groupie which eatures some brilliant guitar work by Canadian lcrry Doucette TAKE ME HOME heri asablanca NBIJ 7133 Super Tramp Sample some Breakfast In America and youll likely find yourself sitting through second and third helpings Since their classic 1974 release Crime of the Century British rockers Supertramp have been uncannily consistent in turning out tripquality music making them one of the most popular Import acts among anadian rock fans Breakfast In America Super lramps third album since Crime is by far their most delectable concoction to date It consists of It times none of which is too deep musically or lyrically but all of which are fresh different and well per formed Writing credits and vocals go to Rick DaVIes anrl Roger Hodgson Curiously the tight harmonies and backing vocals as In the urgent falsetto intro to lone Hollywood smack of the Bee lees current style But Supertramp unlike the Bee lees are not into disco What they deliver is special brand of pleasant soft rock John Helliwell adds some nice touches with his smooth Traditional Acadian singer creates awareness of history MONTREAL CPI Al though she says most tradi tional Acadian songs are sad this doesnt stop New Bruns wick singer Edith Butler from puttingon upbeat shows take the positive ap proach though always say things for my people to be aware of like that history repeats and even if we arent sent away In ships again there are other ways of destroying people Miss Butler said in recent interview Iler ancestors were French settlers who lived in the Man times since the early 1600s and whose lands were taken over by the British I50 years later Their property confiscated the Acadians were deported on ships to dozen strange shores down the Atlantic coast Some escaped and others found their way back in the years that fol lowed It is their descendaan who live in small towns like Paquet ville NS where Miss Butler was brought up The reason were still here is that for years everybody left us alone which was fine Aca dians have tradition of living on their own If we had wanted to be in the system It would have meant going to English schools or English courts Of course thats all changed now There are French schools and laws in New Brunswuk up holding French But think its still in our genes to want to be left alone IIT WATCH TV Miss Butler says her musical Easy to pick out Bucky Plzzarelll is easy to pick out in the world of jazz guitarists hisgultar has seven strings not the usual six Pizzarelli has played it ll years on such records as Janis Ians At Seventeen on such shows as Today and Tonight AP Photo career got off to good start In Iaquetvdle because the people there had nothing to do in their evenings before television ar rived so they played fiddles and accordions and sang the songs of old Acadia Her formal musical training there was three years of piano lessons although she now plays on stage the guitar dulcimer harmonica accordion and telticdrum In the late 1960s between courses at the University of Moncton and at Quebec Itys laval University Miss Butler sang on radio and television Iii New Brunswwk and Quebec By the early 1970s she had played in Japan at the Osaka Worlds Fair had toured an ada in Europe and had recorded the first of her five al bums Then in ltt73 she moved toMontreal like It here but know its only temporary At this stage in my life have to be here but one day Ill go back to where come from There are lot of Acadiaiis in Montreal rr Iaquetvillc itself has furnished big part of the population It used to be tough here for Acadians but were more equal now to the Quebecois culturally and in education Still were different Its like people from say New foundland and Ontario they both speak English but they have different origins and ac cents aiid ways of life As for her future plans Miss Butler says she will have new album recorded on her own laA bel SIIS United States tour planned for later this spring and more television work in both French and English Miss Butler also hopes to rev turn soon to little island called Belle Ile en Mer off the French Brittany coast wllitll she visited last vear BRIGHTER ILAIE Andromeda the only galaxy outside our own that is visible to the naked eye is It billion times as bright as the sun reed work often helping set the mood of the song On tunes like Breakfast In America and Take the Long Way Home its Dix ielandish clarinet On Casual Conversation its melancholy sax Theres not weak track on Breakfast especially appeals ing are Goodbye Stranger Child of Vision and the beautiful Lord Is It Mine BREAKFAST IN AMERICA Siipertramp and SPznox Frank Zappa Frank Zappa takes his bi7arre sense of humor pretty seriously and thats shame In the course of two decades of recording Zappa has demonstrated his worth as bluesrock guitarist has shown that he indeed does know how to fashion song and yes that he can be wit All this could work to Zappas benefit were it not for hIS perverse attitudes cult hero of the rebellious fills Zappa still believes in selfindulgence Do what you want say what you want and hang the conven llOnS It wears thin quickly on Zap pas new album Sheik Yer bouti Being tworecord set its twice as bad as It might have been The title itself indicates Zap pas love of lampoon its spoof of the disco hit of several years ago Shake Your Booty Iever and no one has anything against little satire But Zappa isnt content with just being clever he goes out of his way to be repulsive As result the bulk of the album is built on smut Like the shab hiest type of club comedians he bases his laughs on shock value Zappa provides detailed information on the lyric sheet about how each tune was recorded and overdubbed The Special Note on the cut Rub ber Suit for example is 15 lines of incongruous technical in formation The track itself is nothing more than deliberate electronic noise Another cut Im So Cute ends with nightmarish chari tings against eerie accompani ment Its tune played strictly for laughs But when it ends the listener can hear band member burst into laughter and ask the sound engineer Ill credulously Did you just record that Thats about the tone of the entire four sides of Sheik Yer bouti It gives way to another possible question equally iii credulous Did you just buy that SIIEIK YHRBOlTI Frank Zappa Zappa
