mgww the oxamlner Friday April 1979 Annexation dispute heating up Mayor attacks aldermen on split By DENNIS LANTIIIER Of The Examiner The aldermen involved in tr ing to settle the annexation dispute in secret dont have commitment to the long term growth of Barrie Mayor Ross Archer said Thursday Aldermen Gord Mills Jim Shirley Meg ODonal Doug Jagges and Bill Knowles have secretly met during the past two weeks in an attempt to set tle the annexation dispute Ald Shirley told The Ex miner other members of coun cil were holding out on lnnisfils last offer because of pride The aldermen who havent are the ones who want to see Barrie has sufficient growth Mayor Archer told The Ex aminer We dont want to see lot of fringe development on the outskirt of the city Pride thats nonsense said Mayor Archer If it was pride we wouldnt have agreed to meet with lnnisfil We were prepared to negotiate but they EVANGELIST VAN JOHNSON werent Its illogical to say it is pride We have commitment to the growth of Barrie and were trying to fulfill that GOALS ESTABLISHED The growth objectives were established several years ago to provide goals for liar rie said the mayor The original MR line is con Evangelist healing preaching in Barrie By RICHARD THOMAS if The Examiner Canada is on the eve of the greatest spiritual awakening the world has ever seen says man dedicated to preaching the gospel of healing deliverance from sin sickness and disease Our country is turning to God said Evangelist an Johnson who started three day crusade of healing and miracle services Thursday the Continental Motor Inn in Barrie In an interview before Ihurs days service Johnson told The examiner the miracle working power of God is going to mushroom have seen it happening said Johnson 30 native of Cambridge Ont and the fully ordained head of the Miracle Centre church in Welland twomonth tour which will take him across the coun try and into the United States as far south as Iennessee Johnson and his team will hold services during which ac cording to the advcrtising the lame walk the blind sec and thc leaf hear havent held miracle serr vice in the past five years without someone claiming to have been healed by miracle Johnson said have even had people come to my meetings who have been cured of cancer This power to cure disease even lengthen short limbs throueh the laying on of hands is not his own Johnson said NOT FAITH HEALIIR am not faith healer have never healed anyone in my life It is the power of God direct supernatural interven tion of the Holy Spirit Johnson described himself as catalyst through whose belief the miracles of healing can be worked Jesus taught that healing should accompany the believer he said The evangelist said to be true believer person must undergo the spiritual ex perience of being born again The must acknowledge their sins repent and become spiritually plugged into God he said Johnson said he himself was born again at 16 He enrolcd at the Tanadian Nazarene Bible College in Win nipeg where four years later during another religious cx pcriencc which he calls the hop tism of the Holy Spirit he began talking in strange languages myself did not know what Several claim to be cured Several persons who attended healing and miracle service by Evangelist Van Johnson in Barrie Thursday night claimed after the meeting their ailments had been at least relieved if not completely cured Johnson liti head of the Miracle entre church in Welland is in Barrie until Satur dy as part of twormonth tour which will take him and his crusadi tcam across the country and to the United States During the scrvicc Johnson laid hands on scveral member of the congregation some of whom appeared to faint or go into deep sleep and were laid in the ground Almost all of those who were touched by the evangelist con firmed his diagnoses of their complaints which included scvere headaches high blood pressure back injuries and digestive problems One girl also confirmed the cvangelists statement that she had suffered fall as child and hurt her back When Johnson laid hands on her to heal her of shortened leg caused by the accident the girl said she felt like the whole inside of my leg was growing Another lady who lost kneecap in an accident seven years ago was also treated for shortened leg The leg moved on its own the lady who wished to remain anonymous said later actually felt ig growing The woman put all of her weight on the injured leg before the congregation something she later said sht had not been able to do before Jim Bremncr of nearby Stroud was treated by Johnson or healed for ulcers and an obstruction in the bowel Bremner said before he came to the meeting he had been suf fering constant pain for more than year and was scheduled for surgery The pain was relieved tonight he said after the meeting actually felt it He said the feeling he ex perienced when the evangelist laid hands on him was difficult to describe There was an extra strength inside and the sensation of be ing on air liremncr said llrcinncrs wife Freda who was treated for post operative pains in her stomach said she felt pins and needles going through my feet and toes AIIIRLTII Mrs Bremner said everything Johnson had sur miscd about her condition was certainly all true Her pain was also relieved she said firmly believe in what hap pened whatever it was Mrs Bremner said During the service Johnson told the congregation he was not healer now was he the source of the miracles The healing was caused through the power of God he said Johnson said he had not come to bring new religion but to bring more of the power of God He said Christians of all denominations were coming together in their rediscovery of this power The gifts of prophecy and heating are being restored to the church he said Johnson told the congrega tion Gods time clock is about to strike the midnight hour to herald Jcsus return RT was saying Johnson said INCIDENT RIXlRS Johnson said incidents such as this recur in his services and the miracles of heating are signs to unlxhcvcrs of the power of God Most of the people itsus healed were on street corners where people could see it lhe evangelist said thc main thrust of his lllllltsll besides seeing the physical needs of the sick met is to iii troduce them to the power oi Jesus to save their souls ur service IS geared to build faith he said If we can build the faith the healing is thee IIvcryonc who tnily believes will get their miracle The team of four young men who accompany the services with music and personal testimony have all been heated of some complaint Johnson said It stands to reason if you are with people who believe it helps to ignite your faith But in the healing aspect of his ministry Johnson said he does stress the power of the my dividtiuls faith or the power of IXlSIIILtllllllklIlL strcss lhc powcr of Hod hcsuid flVIIICIJICVIIHS IIIC IIIl Even iltlllItIlttl or Illtist whose faith is weak illt still Ilifll under ti doctors care have been heal ed at the Stllt and the doc for has verified IIlt healing after Johnson Stiltl lod has done what doctors could not do The healing powers taught by Jesus ignore the OMB line we might as well not have gone to the trouble of an annexation study and hearing at all he said lnnisfils proposal has neither the sanction of good planning policy or that of the OMB said the Barrie alderman am not prepared to win meaningless applaUse at the cost of basic planning prin ciples he said We have of feied two compromises to In iiisfil in the last month and they have not been willing to discuss any compromise If the Toronto Centred Region Plan twhich distributes popultion figures was chang ed with populaton forecasts be ing extended upward or downward then obviously the boundary line would change HARD TO UNDERSTAND The alderman says he find it hard to understand lnnisfils reluctance to produce popula tion evidence before the OMB My challenge to lnnisfil is this he says Why are you afraid to appear before the MR and exercise the right you have won to present demographic evidence rather then wasting taxpayers money chasing legal technicality in Ottawa The new members of council who support lnnisfils line do not realize the implication of the qustion Ald Ernie Rotman said believe Ald Shirley is not aware of everything behind it he said Its been at least six or seven years since it has been going on HOLDING OUT The members of council who have been holding out on the matter are being rwlistic and have taken good look at both sides of the question said Ald Rotman Ald Shirley said he had ap proached Ald Rotman and tried to get him to change his mind Ald Shirley said he has learned the provincial liberal party would not block annexa tion proceedings if both sides agreed to the boundary today City Editor Ian Mulgrew7266537 Kelly l979 citizen of year in Barrie resident of 29 years is the llzirriccitilcnoftheycur Mrs Margaret Kelly anar
