12 the examiner Thundy Aprll 1979 sgortsoene Toronto pros good losers all By GARRY FORBES Of The Ex aminer attitude in their kids Tots mock the pros and Toronto is wellstocked with cliihs in all major sports attractions but basketball More impor tant these clubs are all losers No one can accuse Torontos professional teams of setting bad example of kids in these parts by promoting nasty win at all costs attitude In fact in The City as its in habitants arrogantly refer to it professional teams refuse to winat all costs Even the Blizzard Torontos newest bigleague club lost its first game in fashion which indicates it will follow the tradition set by its Hogtown predecessors Kids can see their heroes on the Argos the Maple Leafs and the Blue Jays losing gracefully year after year and sort of giving their best in annual hohum campaigns Unlike in other centres where children are forced to idolize champion athletes kids around here soon learn that winning isnt very important at all They learn that you dont have to be great to snap up professional contract that mediocrity and fasttalking agent can secure you spot in the Toronto sporting limelight The money isnt usually great but you can work yotir way up to guest shot on Overtime and talk nonsense like Ilarold Ballard does say its gorxt for kids sporting attitudes to live close to Toronto not in it Were at safe distance here close enough that the kids get steady flow of news that Toronto team survived yet another loss but far enough away that were not exposed to the humiliation which accompanies the def eat Perhaps someday Toronto will be the home of squad of professional champions Maybe the Blue Jays will win in Kansas City tonight the first victory in Toronto reign of terror over Major League baseball it would have to be an accident though Youve witnessed how the owners of the Blue Jays and other bigleague Toron to teams have done all they can to avoid bringing the best combinations of talent to the city in an effort to prevent such an occurrence No the kids are safe The owners will not mislead them in to thinking winning is desirable thing Just remember this whenever you meet sports fan from another bigeague city tell them you live close to Toronto but not in it Theyll respect you for it Tough talk Howard oseIL The Most Famous Voice in the World must have gotten jealous about Toronto Maple Leafs pro prietor llaroid Ballards apperaiice in recent issue of Sports Illustrated special section which might have been called the Thougbtless Remarks and Behavior Depart ment displayed Happy Harold as the biggest idiot in sports title osell has long defended from So the other day the Monday Night Menace announced that organized sport his employer isa spiral of hypocrisy contradiction and ripoff Gee Howard we didnt mean to wake you out As you knowthe Metropolitan Toronto Hockey League plans to introduce noixxlychecking rule for its youngest division next season The idea adopted after much debate about how to stop 10 yearold kids from disabling each other was borrowed from Quebec where the rule applies up to the peewee age group At least we thought it applied only up to peewee Dangerous Dave my wee brother was in Montreal last weekend and reported that the nobodychcck rule was enforced in the CanadiensPenguins game he wandered into There wasnt one halfdecent check thrown in the whole game insists Dangerous Well maybe one Robinson was thrown for cartwheel You have to understand though Daves idea of good time is to watch the cat get its head stuck under the couch titan Barrie native Jim Hamilton property of the Pittsburgh Penguins wasnt in the lineup for the weekend game against the anadiens but he was taken on by the club early this week Hamilton has spent most of his professional puckchasing career with Penguins American Hockey League entry the Binghamton Dusters but has been recalled several times for spot duty with the parent club This however would be fine opportunity to be ini pressive The playoffs loom and the big clubs are giving their toprankcd secondstringeis shot at instant stardom The system has worked before couple of years ago Montreal decided to find new spot in the playoff lineup for young goaltender And for Montreal and Ken Dryden it hasnt worked out too badly Two other products of the BMHA Rob Garner and Alex McKendry are also in premier minor leagues only few strides away from their parent squads Gardner is with Binghamton and McKendry is with Fort Worth Texans of the Central Hockey League top develop ment tank of the New York Islanders McKendry captain in Forth Worth was the first draft pick of the islanders two seasons back lie was brought up few weeks ago but has since rctumed to Texas QLOTES OF THE WEEK REFEREE HERB MacMulIen responding close to Toronto has got to be good for the development of proper sporting Barrie clubs ioin North York lea Barrie will enter five teams in the North York competitive soccer league in Toronto this his second threegoal game of the season Wednesday night as Montreal Canadiens defeated Detroit Red Wings 41 in waning National Hockey League regularseason play veteran centre Jacques Lemaire wasnt happy This despite the fact the Mon treal victory gave the Cana diens threepoint lead over New York Islanders in the race for the overall league title The Canadiens now have 113 points and the Islanders 110 Both teams have two games left to play But Lemaire who had his other threegoal game as the Canadiens overwhelmed Van couver Canucks 111 March was chagrined by the work of referee Gregg Madill Steve Shutt scored the other Montreal goal Vaclav Nedomansky had beaten Ken Dryden in the Mon treal goal for his 38th goal of the season at 205 of the opening period and Lemaire had brought the Canadiens even with his 22nd of the schedule at 1259 of game that had its share of roughness in the early going Just before the period ended centre Doug Risebrough got what looked like sure break way As he skated toward Jim Rutherford the Detroit goalie Andre St Laurent appeared to hook the Montreal player Referee Gregg Madill did not call penalty on the play and raceway results lvtt rdn pace mile
