Racing faces troubled times By El HARPER realizes there are many problems facing it but theres great diversity of views as to what needs doing Most agree the racing industry is currently experiencing thoroughbred racings future and its tongterm welfare is an industrywide concern be the main concern of the industrys leaders and decision makersthe owners breeders officials executives and others For many years the racetracks had almost monopoly on gambling but that era is over Lotteries are now firmly entrenched and vie with the tracks Other forms of gambling such as casinos in the States are proliferating The gambling aspect of horse racing is something that many people have taken for granted but no matter how great the horses the tracks would be hard pressed to find customer without betting Owners face spiralling costs The owners are faced with spiralling operating costs and insufficient purse monies for everyday races As one local ownertrainer said just recently $4000 claimer eats just as much as Spectacular Bid or Secretariat There is great imbalance in purses becoming apparent Chay The thoroughbred racing industry is currently undergoing great deal of selfexamination The industry period of unprecedented change and the pressure on it are varied The pressures are such that the question of The economic viability of thoroughbred racing seems to as the growth of purses for the large stakes races shows The public reaction generally is that racing must be doing all right if it can afford purses of $200000 and more and if in dividual yearlings can warrant sales prices of several hun dred thousands dollars However even though the majority of racing stable owners lose money on their thoroughbred operations in most yearsthey provide the one essential ingredient without which the industry could not survive Without the athletes the horses themselves the trainers veterinarians mutuel clerks blacksmiths racing secretaries auctioneers stewards jockeys and others would have no function Some of the people in the thoroughbred industry seem to ignore the importance of the horse especially good horses and are instead thinking more of the entertainment as pects of the industry and the marketing and promotion which they feel should bedone They look to attract people to the tracks by providing live entertainment giveaways and other promotional gimmicks Promoters losing sight of fact think that they are Secretariat Forego Alydar Affirmed and Spectacular Bid have done infinitely more for thoroughbred racing over the past few years than Sunday racing exotic betting and band concerts Horse racing is one sport that doesnt need to change its rule to add more excitement or spectator interest propch ly conducted it is still one of the most exciting sports in the country This is not to say that some tracks couldnt improve their physical facilities there is certainly room for improve ment in some of them And quite possibly improvement of the facilities and marketing programs will encourage more people to visit race track The industry must also be vigilant about its image and police itself to eliminate any abuses and wrongdoing on the part of anyone connected with it But most of all the industry should be wary of any changes which will detract from the unique character and appeal of the sport Anything which makes it more like lot tery with the thoroughbreds perceived as no more than numbered balls in lottery machine will erode the en thusiasm and support of that limited number of people who can afford the financial risk of providing the equine athletes on which the sport depends Watsons flawless round earns one stroke lead losing sight of the fact that between races by HILTON HEAD ISLAND SC AP Tom Watson shot nearflawless round of
