Examiner This is not your average Walt Disney type animal story Most of them have happy endings This one doesnt Theres another big difference Most animal stories depicted in books and on film are fiction This one is true Its about the dogs and cats stacked in cages at the Barrie Humane Society shelter on Pat terson Road and the people who care for them and kill them Its myth that most of the animals find good homes Theres something comfortable about believing that kind ladies and gentlemen drive up to the shelter in big cars adopt cat or dog and take it home to an acre of land in the country where it scampers happily ever after with clean rosy checked children The harsh reality is that only small fraction of stray pup pies or kittens are claimed by their owners Another lot are taken to the shelter by owners who can no longer be bothered looking after them Only few find new homes Most wait in deaths row for about week in cages Then they are exter minated their bodies cremated The animals have an ar ticulate spokesman in the per son of Beatrice BMke super visor of the shelter The day the Examiner talked to Mrs Burke she was spitting mad Its Monday she apologiz ed not good day but its as good as any other around here helped to kill seven dogs this morning Yes seven The women here have to hold them while the veterinarian gives them the needle it cuts us to pieces We destroy about 30 dogs every week Mrs Burke said Pets arent the problem people are Im just sick and tired of the ones who come in here draggr ing cat or dog with some cock and bull story about why they cant keep it any longer They hand it over and say you wont kill my dog will you Welir im sorry but we will She said it was time people knew the truth about what hap pens to their strayed or un wanted pets Another sore point with Mrs Burke is people who adopt pets and dont have them spayed or neutered Theyll take beautiful lilr tle female pup out of here and six months later theyre back with her and little pups shc storms Then we get the dirty work Instead of destroying one dog we have seven or nine to destroy Shes even more emphatic about male dogs female will come in heat once or twice year she says roving male can breed 3135 days of the year They run in packs circle house wherc female is in heat and will even attack to reach their goal ne dog recently went through plate glass window to get after female if they are neutered as pups before they breed this simply doesnt occur People have got to learn to exercise more responsibility in looking aftertheiranimals Its not just mongrel dogs who are destroyed People will go out and pay lot of money for pure bred dog keep it for while tire of it and bring it to us says Mrs Burke Some of the reasons they give really turn us off Right now we have beautiful little eight months old cocker spaniel tatooed It has five days to find new home After that it must be destroyed The story we got was that the lady has baby now and the child picks up the dog droppings when she is outside Wouldnt it make lot more sense to slap the kids hand and teach it to leave the dirt alone im so damn sick of kiiiiiig animals Ill never get used to it she says Mrs Burke is strongly oppos ed to the use of animals for research purposes Impounded dogs can be requisitioned for use in laboratory experiments Its unneCessary and far too much of it goes on Mrs Burke says have told my staff that if anybody from Toronto shows up here wanting dogs tell them to bring in the requisition form By the time they go and get tiic form the dogs will bc long gone out of here Mrs Burke also has strong censure for pet owncr who walk their dogs and let them foul other peoples property People without animals dont appreciate dog dirt on their property she says Thats just another aspect of responsible pet ownership She is defensive about canine control officers the socallcd dogcatchers frequently un po ular with the general pu lic Those dogcatchers are pretty wonderful guys she says They have to take all the abuse yet they are the first ones put when an emergency occurs The dogcatchers some are women are on duty 24 hours day for week straight it is they who must rescue sick or abandoned animals pick up the injured or the remains of thosc killed on the road People who criticize thc dogcatchers for picking up strays dont know what it is like to pick up the mutilated body of an animals body once it has been struck by car or truck Mrs Burke says If people trur iy loved their animals they would take care not to let them roam at large Last year almost 5000 animals passed through the Barrie Humane Society shcltcr 622 abandoned dogs only 234 were claimed by their owners Nearly 600 dogs were impound ed Less than half were adopted Adopt ion procedures are sim ple The animals with biuc cards on their cages are available if chosen the dog or cat will be given distemper shot before being released The owner is given certificate which must bc taken to veterinarian within three work ing days if after examina tion any disease is detected the new owner has two days III which to return the animal to the shelter its $25 for dog $10 for cat reasonable amount which hardly covers the cost of food and carc while the animal was in the shcltcr Dog owners are rcquircd by law to iicciisc their pets In Bar rie its $6 for male or spayed female up until the end of February and $8 for full female Then thc rates go up to $8 and $10 The Humane Socicty docs not issue the license but they are for sale there At recent meeting of Humane Society officers in Toronto one of the chief topics on the agenda dealt with more humane methods of euthanasia They used to eieclrocute the animals Now they do it by in jection They are looking for an even better way To kiilr that is Because people dont care enough the examiner Monday 19 1919 JACKPOI $37 700950 AND GROWING LOTTARIO WINNING NUMBERS says works sUperintendent By DENNIS LANTIIIER Of The Examiner it has not been real dif ficult winter for city snow Clearing crews says Neil Fox superintendent of public works in Barrie would think its been about an average winter Fox told The Examiner Theres been no major storms this year but the amount of snowfall has been pretty steady So far the Barrie area has We do use some outside con tractors now for hauling snow he says dont know its dif ficult to say It costs quite bit for outside contractors with having to pay standby time pay and all that Fox says that at this point it is more economical for the ci ty to continue using city crews for the operation Fox says the operations now are geared towards wmtcr salt in snow clearing operations this year Last year just 3500 tons of salt were used and in 1977 4000 tons of salt were put on city streets lot depends on the weather he says can be unpredictable The uncertainty is reflected in the budget requirements for the department Last year the public works department asked for $370000 received 12508 Ctntilmllcs of It actually ended upusing about trig permalfi3 inshllg saturday MarCh snow about 10 feet said ivan $396M In Orb are on Henry of the ministry of While budget time has not The crews are now working natural resources it might be little more then average he said We usually vary between eight and 10 feet Generally speaking said Fox the area can expect to get about three major snowstorins each year With spring just around the corner tlic area has not had major snowstorm all year come before city council the department will ask for 3415000 its really guess all the way says Fox lot of it depends on the quantity of snow we get and the amount of salt and sand we use onlracting the service out may be an option left to the city in the future says liox Win nipegs try at doing just the same wes success but are winter on other projects ready should late storm develop Probably later on when the snow melts well take the wings off our big snow plows he says But it only takes 15 or 20 minutes to put the things back on Fox says the sanders are ready to go all year round BONUS UMBER ABOVE REGULAR NUMBERS WIN ANY ORDER NIIII It
