Purebred racing with canine twist By El HARPER Chay During my recent trip to Florida paid visit to the Hollywood Greyhound Track The facilities were very im presswe in fact they would put many of the horse racing tracks to shame The clubhouse was large with comfortable box seating awrovided an excellent view of the track The Hollyw dog track has racing six nights week With matineos every Monday Wednesday and Saturday In recent years greyhound racing has increased in popularity butin Florida this growth has been spectacular Greyhound racmg is now the number one spectator sport in the state With more than ten million fans paying admission to the various tracks This popularity has also enriched the state of Florida with almost $50 million in taxes from the greyhound tracks going to the state Oldest pure breed dog The greyhound is the oldest pure breed dog in the world and his ancestry can be traced back to time beyond the building of the Pyramids He was used for hunting during the time of the Medes Assyrians and Egyptians thousands of years ago These fleet hounds were so highly regarded that during the reign of Britains King anute there was decree that prohibited any person below the rank of gentleman from owning one Greyhounds were imported to the United States from England in the 1800s as device to rid the midwestcrn farmer of the jackrabbit persistent crop destroyer Greyhounds and whippets were used for racing in sport called coursing but this was without firm public acceptance because of the chasing and killing of rabbits as part of the sport The invention of the mechanical lure to replace the live rabbit gave greyhound racing respectability and the dogs chased the imitation rabbit with the same enthusiasm as they had the live one Owen Smith invented the mechanical lure in 1912 Smith is generally recognized as the father of modern greyhound racing Responds to passing lure Most racing greyhounds are from two to four years old and their weight varies from 50 to 77 pounds Most races are from 516 to 716 of mile greyhounds training starts when he is 12 months old and at that time he is taught to res pond to the passing of the litre and to try to run it down Greyhounds have no sense of smell but they do have remarkable eyesight When the greyhound chases the rabbit it is not because it is rabbit but because the greyhound runs for fun and will chase almost anything that is in mo tion The average greyhound is ready to race at the age of 17 months and by this time it has established the running pat tern that it will use all of its racing life It is also capable of speed of 40 miles an hour Racing carefully controlled Dog racing is very carefully controlled and all the dogs are checked on their arrival at the track two hours before post time They are weighed and identified before they are allowed to race Of course the excitement for the fans involves placing bets on the outcome of the race and greyhound racing offers variety of bets on each of the twelve races Apart from the standard win place and show wagering there is the popular quiniela where you select the first two wcyhounds in either order The perfecta is similar to the quiniela but you must choose the first two finishers in the exact order On each race you can also bet trifecta where you must select the first three greyhounds across the finish line in the exact order The payoffs on some of these bets can often be quite high Altogether night at the dogs can be very cnjoyaltlc and also found it profitable but the thoroughbreds will always be my number one choice sports calenda
