12 the examiner Saturday Mar 10 1979 Editor Stephen Gouer entertainn ExMontreoler launches second career as artist By STEPHEN GAUER Of The Examiner Graham Scholes can trace his interest in art right back to his public school days but it wasnt until two years ago after 20 year career in sales and design in the Montreal packaging in dustry that he made fulltime commitment to art He painted studied and taught art in Mon treal for year after changing careers an then moved to Bar rie with his November moved to the Toronto area to develop the market to become know and to pursue the shows in this area says Scholes whose exhibit of water color paintings continues at the Barrie Art Club Gallery on Duniop Street until the end of March picked Barrie because like the north country and because its close to Georgian College which has good reputation for art Scholess use of ilie transparent water color techni que which hes refined through studies with Zoltan Zsabo wellknown American water color artist gives his landscapes and stiiiiifes strik ingly luminous quality The luminosity comes from the fact that opaque pigments arent used and from allowing some of the whiteness of the paper to show through even in the darker colors its the true watercolor technique although it takes much practice and results are difficult to achieve its almost chemistry the amount of water and paint and how wet the paper is Speed can be factor too especially with wet on wet technique ap plying second layer of color before the first has dried You have to be decisive and know exactly what youre doing from step to ste The transparent water color technique used by Scholes not only gives his paintings bright and shining quality it also allows him to put depth into his landscapes Like camera family last you train the eye to make use of depth of field The wet on wet technique can give you soft edges making backgrounds slightly out of focus Like most water color artists Scholes concentrates on land scapcs and still lifes He says that ideas for paintings come from what turns yoti on like shape and balance thc texture you see in slump or the tex ture of snow Youre always learning because you pick subject that allows you to use techniquc you want to pursue further You pick subject and make it work Scholes Works in studio at the rear of his home on St Viri cent Street just north of the ci ty limits Hes converted sun room into spacious work area with large windows barn wood siding and large wood burning stove He used the studio for teaching he gives three or four threehour lessons week and for one man shows feel can market my own product he says Andi enjoy meeting people it keeps me from becoming hermit Scholes teaches night course in water color technique at Georgian College He also conducts art demonstrations At the end of July hell be holding oneweek Workshop on transparent water color paint in Scholes has three shows scheduled for this year Mon treal show in May show in his studio in June and Toronto show at the Gibson Gallery in September Scholes feels that interest in art is growing by leaps and bounds as people find they have more leisure time and want to use that time creative ly Water colors ha vc become extremely popular he says People realize how difficult the technique is As arts and crafts shows educate people they become more knowiedgea bic And as the public becomes more knowledgeable about Brightness depth add special quality Theres no denying the universal appeal of water color painting its not an art form that places great demands on the viewer but when its well done the results are pleasing to the eye and relaxing to the spirit Graham Scholess show at the Barrie Art Club Gallery is filled with landscapes and still lifes that have this universal appeal but theres an added quality that makes his work special he uses the transparent water color techni que so well that his painting seem to glow with light of their own This luminous quality results from the use of special pigments that give the colors in painting brightness that at tracts the eye immediately As well Scholes uses soft focus technique for background ob jects creating depth of field in the landscapes that draws you right into the scene Three of the large paintings in the show use this technique particurlarly effectively Bar ries Farmer Market shows local street scene blurring and softening details to capture the atmosphere of Mulcaster Street Telephone poles and buildings provide vertical balance for the painting and the sidewalk running down the centre is shimmering path of melted snow and reflected light Barneys island is very evocative lake scene The elements in the paintings are simple tiny rock island tree lake and misty shoreline but Scholess use of soft color and shading give tiic scene dreamy ethereal qiiali ty The painting is good ex ample of how Scholes uses IIIt water color medium for strong emotional effect with simple composition and ex cellent control of shading The third painting Summers Pause concentrates on the tcxr tures of stone and wood The viewer looks out through small window in an old farm building The central focus of the painting is the window the sky and ham visible through it and green bottle sitting on the window ledge but surrounding the window arc the strong tex tures of old stone and timers The other paintings in the show are landscapes and still lifes winter and summer scenes plants and household objects in some the objects are captured almost photographically while in others Scholes uses soft focus technique and subtle shading to dramatize the scenes The ra diance of the transparent water color style gives his work strength and vividncss thats appealing visually and cmo tionally Scholcss show at the gallery continues until the end of March The gallery located at iilt Dunlop St is open Mon day to Friday from to it Georgian College Theatre 800 pm °° ms 00 Fashion Merchandising at Georgian College Presents
