Provincial program to increase productivity By RICHARD THOMAS Of The Examiner The provincial government has announced new program which will entitle farmers to grants to maintain and increase productivity on their farms ministry of agriculture spokesman in Toronto said Monday the main thrust of the grants will be in the area of conservation covering pro jects in water and soil erosion control The grants will also be given to finance facilities for storage of earth and manure designed to minimize problems of runoff encountered in handling animal waste the spokesman said The spokesman said attention will also be given to minimum warranties on farm machinery and contract standards to pro tect farmers Details of the program have not been worked out yet the spokesman said and should be finished during the summer Clint Nesbitt the ministrys agricultural representative in Elmvale said the new program would likely replace capital grants program which expires March 31 after 12 years Therapists want more work responsibility Local physiotherapists say members of the profession are capable of diagnosing certain orthopedic problems and treating patients without doc tors referral Terry Page of the Barrie Physiotherapy clinic told The Examiner there might be some concern in the medical profes sion that physiotherapists may diagnose cases incorrectly but increased sixcialization in the field has raised the level of pro ficncy We are not trying to be doc tors bit we are becoming more and more comiwtent in our field Page said urrent provincial legislation prevents physiotherapists from accepting patients without doctors referral tintan Physiotherapy Associaton officials have called the referral system obsolete and are demanding the public be allowed direct access to their services Page said the system is fail mg because physiotlitrapists must assess the injuries themselves anyway lot of doctors dont really know what we are doing and we get referrals for heat and massage treatment which we have not done for years Page said Specialization in such small field has in some cases given pliysiottierapists an edge over the general practioner who can not specialize because he has too much to know said lloug Freer also with the clinic in Barrie Some general practioiiers are not sure what to refer or not to refer Freer said It physiotlierapisls trained who keep abreast of developments in the field can actually teach doc tors hcsaid Freer said he would not be ifraid to accept patients THE 3300 SUMMER SAVER Laker does it Operated under regulations issued without the reterral even though it would mean addi tional responsibility for their well being However some uniform level of competence should be established in the profession through testing system he said lot of physiotherapists could not handle it yet because some who may have been in the field for long time have not upgraded their skills Freer said The profession should also maintain the close relationship with doctors he said 7out of IObused SchOOI busing increasing More than seven out of ten students of Catholic schools in Simcoe ounty are based
