through borrowing good idea planner By RICHARD THOMAS if The Examiner Borrowing money at higher interest rate to pay off mor tgagc can not only reduce the debt period but also result lil tremendous savings local financial planner told members of the Association of lrofes sional Engineers of tlntario Vcdnesday Sid Dickinson of Dickinson and Alexander in Barrie told about 40 association meiiibeis laying off your mortgage is good investment Dickinson said the holder of current mortgage worth $40000 at 12 per cent would end up paying back almost $107000 over the 35 year amortization period based on monthly payincntsofSill Making privilege pay ment of an additional $1000 year borrowed from bank at 13 per cent would reduce the mortgage period to years and decrease the cost to about $85000 said Dickinson You would save 2i years and more than $00000 in interest he said Two mortgages are often bet ter than one because the debt can be split and the amortixa tion period shortened Dickiii son said It may cost bit more per month but if you can swing it you will be better off he said lucst speaker at an associa tion dinner Dickinson outlined to members several methods of saving money and reducing taxes through such options as Registered Retirement Savings llans tRRSlt and other popular tax shelters As source of retirement in come an RRSI was more advantageous investment than bonds as the payments into the plan wcr tax deductible and there was no tax on the accrued capital or annual interest said Dickinson Bonds are liable to tax on both thc capital and interest based on the holders current income tax rate he said The strength of an thSl lies in the magic of compound in terest Dickinson said But to make these numbers work you must choose the right invest ment Buying stocks through an RRSI was bad investment Dickinson said as they are liable to capital gains tax when sold Sonic insurance companies will charge commission for their retirement plans whereas trust companies do not he said To get the maximum out of an RRSI you must be very careful in selecting the right vehicle The financial planner said in come splitting was becoming an increasingly popuiar method of tax shelter and is best liandlv ed through an interest free do inaiid loan Rather than pay taxes on savr ed capital husband can lend it to his wife who can then in vest it and claim the interest as part of her income usually at lower tax rate Dickinson said Investments in hotels motels movies and oil and gas exploration are other excellent tax shelters in some cases creating losses which can be written off against personal in come tax said Dickinson But one guideline you must remember is that the tax shelter must stand on its own two feet as an investment he told association
