death By ANNE McNEILLY The Record KITCHENER Ont CP There is waiflike quality about Susan Musgraves ap pearance that seems little at odds with the force and power of the poems she produces The 27yearold poet from south Vancouver Island was here recently for the Visual and Performing Arts Festival at Sir Wilfrid Laurier University Her readings included excerpts from her ninth and newest book Man to Marry Man to Bury published by McClelland and Stewart In the book she continues to be obsessed with themes of death despair and separation but she says it is development from her earlier works Many of the poems in the new book were written after Ms Musgrave moved from the Queen Charlotte Islands These poems are slightly more urban she said in an in terview was starting to feel as though was writing the same poem over and over again All the words were elemen tal cold rain dark night that kind of thing Now Im using different words and trying different rhythms Ms Musgravc has small delicate features long auburn presents CHILDRENS FANTASY BY CAROL LAUCK MARMAL ADE GUMDROPS IN THE MEws AT BAYFIELD MALL Presented by Special Amngement with Samuel French Friday March at 730 pm Saturday March at II am pm pm Friday March at 730 pm Saturday March ID at come pm pm hair which she touches lot and forthright manner People are always asking me how can write love poems which are so honest but its way of dealing with it of no longer being victim because youve dealt with it through the writing of the pain Her writing also has been way of dealing with her thoughts of death Theres something admi rable about the Japanese idea of suicide Id never have the courage to actually do it but cant help but admire people who do guess also happen to like living PSYCHIATRIC PATIENT Ms Musgrave spent two years in and out of psychiatric hospitals and she talks about it easily Theres something about mad poet that the media have made glamorous 0r ro mantic But while youre there its not very pleasant It provides shelter for you for while and no one can get to you but even tually you have to go out aand face uptothings She says she is unhappy or depressed sometimes but is learning to live with it It seems cyclical in the fall always feel as though Im going to die from some ter minal disease It was while she was patient that she began to write and she has supported herself with it since She left school in Grade 10 and never returned Sometimes people will say to me Look what youve done here in poem thats very interesting use of syntax dont know what some of these things are Thats what makes me think the whole writ ing process is an unconscious one She says some of her writing follows almost mythology which she develops from the world around her When She spent some time in Cambridge England she found that many of the objects in museum were things she col lected herself bones stones ahazel wand They were all objects col lected by primitive thats primitive in quotes tribes It makes me think theres an un derstanding of these objects at some basic level Theyre very powerful Ms Musgrave also has com pleted novel The Charcoal Burners Camp to be released next fall TICKETS $200 general
