during the twoday festival Admission to the festival is Show at Clarkson interprets Arctic By STEPHEN iAlER Of The Examiner Theres quiet and muted quality to the watercolor pairi tings arid pen and ink drawings by Pat Ilart on display at the Clarkson Hotel until the end of the month Miss Hart is the sixth artist to be featured in the current series of monthly art shows at the hotel and her work seems particularly wellsuited to the atmosphere of the Duffy Lounge its direct and ac cessible without being too sim ple or too obvious The sketches and paintings were done during trip to the Arctic in 1977 Miss Ilart has focused on Frobisher Bay and Clyde River small Inuit com munity on Baffin Island as the source material for her land scapes and outdoor scenes The drawings in the show have simplicity and direct ness thats very appealing Miss Hart uses pen and ink in relaxed and spontaneousway that brings scene whether its building harbor or distant view of the Arctic land scape to life with minimum of detail and shading These drawings illustrate without for cing too much detail on the viewer Youre drawn slowly in to the scene and as you pick up on smaller details the shape of building or the brief outline of an object in the foreground of the drawing the scene comes together in one balanced whole The way Miss Hart uses white space in these drawings sug gests the open spaces of Canadas north and the ob jects in her drawings float in this space with an imper manence that says something about life in the Arctic The five watercolor land scapes in the show 77 all scenes of Frobishcr Bay are less at tractive than the drawings Northern landscapes are not spectacular in these paintings We see mountains rocks sea and sky presented with softcnr ed colors and from similar ixrsixctive Two of the pain tings make more striking im pression because of freer ap proach to shape and form theyre landscapes that are abstracted slightly to em phasize the expanse of water and sky and the separating shapes of mountains in bet ween Taken as whole Miss llarts work in the show makes strange and distant place seem almost close and lainiliar She doesnt dramatize the unique qualities of the north instead she softens them slightly and makes them less remote As an artist she Inter prcts northern geography in way thats satisfying and reassuring Her work doesnt make you stand in awe of thc tiortli she manages to scale down the geography without reducing It to picture postcard prct mess showbiz Rock benefit NEW YURK tIgt Rock stars Patti Smith lodd ltun dgrcn Illue
