HELP By STEPHEN NICHOLLS of The Examiner The silent cry for help is being answered Ontarios steams are showing signs of trouble and concerned en vironmentalists are trying to rescue them Destruction of streamside vegetation upset the aquatic environment and precious coldwater streams are disappearing Robin Craig ministry of natural resources biologist at Midhurst said the ministry is trying to protect streams by encouraging stream improvement and by purchasing headwater areas Landowners are advised to avoid soil erosion along stream banks Con tour plowing proper drainage and preventing livestock from trampling banks can reduce erosion The ministry also encourages greenbelt areas These are 30 to 50 feet strips of vegetation along streams Allan Wainio ministry fisheries biologist in Toronto said the greenbelt areas shelter streams from sunlight and prevent erosion Water quality downstream cannot be helped if theres trouble in upstream areas Thats why the ministry has begun buying headwater areas The headwater areas are extremely important said Wainio Thats where the Ai quality water begins If you want to retain the coldwater downstream you must protect the headwaters One of these areas is Copeland Forest about 16 km north of Barrie Dan Mansell ministry Huronia District manager said major reason for buying the 4400 acreforest was to protect the headwaters of the Sturgeon Coldwater and Willow Creeks The tract of land is virtually untouched he said Timber harvesting and trapping is carried out there and it is also used for recreation such as snowmobiling and hiking but it is undeveloped Ron Mills conservation chairman of Brereton Field Naturalists said the Copeland Forest purchase sets precedent in wildlife preservation Mills is an organizer of Save Our Streams project for Matheson Creek branch of Willow Creek that flows from Craighurst to the main branch near Minesing Wetland preservation is essential said Mills Streams are in bad shape across the province he said dont think the situation is going to improve until public participation in creases and people start caring said Mills Landowners must begin seeing the value of coldwater streams Ive had people tell me theyd rather the stream didnt flow through the property It floods and causes erosion and they say its no good to me at all Thats sad Mills and several other interested Barrie area people attended Save Our Stream workshop in Toronto on Saturday At the workshop they learned how to adopt stream what to do to im prove it The local group will use this knowledge to save Matheson Creek which suffers from sever soil erosion said Mills Application has been made for Canada Works grant to employ students in the improvement project he said The work program is still being developed but the group needs tools such as shovels rakes axes and stake pounders Mills said hes hoping in terested local residents will lend the group these necessary tools Simcoe County streams can still be saved said Mills Our resources have lot of potential We must save them before it becomes futile he said Brook trout struggling after mans adverse influence on its ecosystem Brook trout have paid the price for years of mans land development Environmentalists are now trying to roll back those years The brook trouts demise is sign an early symptom of all ing coldwater streams the decline of brook trout popula tions signals trouble in delicate ecosystem that man has disturbed Allan Wainio ministry of natural resources fisheries biologist said in recent inter view Ontarios coldwater streams have been rapidly disappearing When man first arrived in Ontario most of what we now know as warmwater streams were coldwater he said Brook trout were found in practically all river systems in Ontario said Wainio Brook trout prefer water below 65 degrees said Craig lf the temperature gets higher it moves orjiist dies lli illJI ECUSYSHIM its very fragile ecosystem sayd iainio if you warm the water by 10 degrees you eliminate all kinds ot invertebrate fauna Itiitlllfllllp tiny creatures which trout eat There is delicate food chain in the coldwater regime said Wainio Most people dont realize that rcmov ing cover along streams effects the life in the stream its llttr mal pollution Soil erosion from land clearing and certain agricultural practices adds silt to the water The soil deposits cloud the water making it more difficult for trout to find food Silt also absorbs sunlight which further warms the stream The soil also alters the trout habitat Roles and pools where the fish tilde are filled in Gravel areas where trout spawn are covered over by the silt Another factor in causing decrease in brook trout is the intrrxluction of nonnative trout species such as the rainbow and brown trout said raig RAlNROW TROllT Rainbow trout from west of the Rockies were brought into Ontario in the late 1800s They have since spread through the provinces streams and have replaced the native brook trout the most abundant trout species in most Ontario streams including those in Simcoe ouiity said raig Rainbow trout he said can survive warmer water For every 100 rainbows OTTAWA IP The archi tects of $173 million federal program to aid the ailing ship building and repair industry will be satisfied if domestic yards take over entirely build ing ships to meet Canadian needs In the last three years about 300000 to 400000 tons of ships were bought for use in nadian waters one official said liut only half of that was built in Canada The annual Canadian build ing capacity is about 200000 tons the official said If all the domestic requirements for new ships were filled here wed be getting somewhere locally theres probably only about Iii or 40 brook trout said raig Brown trout were introduced into Ontario from Europe iii the 1950s said raig These fish prefer still warmer water and although theyve been suc cessful they are still out numbered by brook trout in most areas its difficult to tell the ef fects of the other trout in the streams said Craig We dont know how the interaction affects the brook trout it could be deterimental The brook trout may be losing out STREAMS DETERIORATING Deteriorating coldwater streams pose serious pro blein said raig Brook trout are the first vic tims of degenerating stream but other desirable fish species will disappear if the water worsens he said if the water continues to become warmer and more heavily laden with silt it will become intolerable for other trout and warmwater fish Eventually only undesirabiespecies such as white suckers and minnows will thrive in the water Stream degeneration is less severe than few years ago said Craig and the brook trout situation is stable POST WAR 800 The post war boom saw the most significant decline in brook trout it hasnt changed much since the midfitts he said Environmental agencies such as the ministry of natural resources have taken steps to prevent further destruction of habitat said Craig ln southwestern Ontario from London to Windsor develop ment virtually wiped out brook trout Simcoe county streams have not reached that point said raig The brook trout situation is stable Right now were trying to roll back the years said raig With stream rehabilitation and habitat protection en vironmentalists are trying to return stream environments to an earlier state We may not be able to make it like it was 100 years ago but maybe we can make it betr tei he said in stream degeneration say environmentalists Burcsik $31 Testing water Wayne LaFrance ministry of natural resources fish and wildlife technician tests local stream water samples Ministry staff use this equipment to test streams for water quality and silt density Heavy siltation Is major factor Fishing tourist promotion but rain bow trout fishing draws an awful lot of tourists John Markovich ollingwood chamber of commerce presir dent said rainbow trout fishing fills in the tourist gap between winter and summer He estimates trout fisherman account for 20 per cent in crease in business during spr ing trout fishing weekend br ings in about 1000 tourists said Markovich Brook trout fishing is not pro moted because Simcoe is not noted as fishing county said Robertson He said however brook trout fishing is attractive and is probably an asset to tourism here the examiner Thursday Feb 15 1919 13 Cry from cold water streams heard and conservationists responding Examiner Photo by Dave Anything that would upset trout fishing here would be harmful said Robertson For this reason the tourist associa tion opposes government talk of reinstating fishing licences Rteintroducing licences might discourage fishing he said Stream damage which would reduce trout populations might also hurt spring tourism in the area Reporter denies allegations about integrity seal hunt TORONTO Toronto Sun reporter who went to Cali fornia at the expense of the Newfoundland government to counter bad publicity about the annual seal hunt denies his in tegrity was compromised but says he will not write any more stories on the hunt Kevin Scanlon said Tuesday he went to Los Angeles and San Francisco last week as part of the Newfoundland govern ments campaign to defend the hunt on his own time and with the approval of his editor because believed in it rnment Employment at the 60 ship building and repair yards in the country reached peak of 17 000 in 1975 when half their out put was destined for other coun tries But the world shipbuilding in dustry is becalmed and employ ment in Canada is down to 12 000 and declining When the government an nounced last week its aid to the industry including main tenanceto the embofttfltrof ii zopercent shipbuilding sub sidy Commerce Minister Jack Horiier said the industry has to expand its capability for repair work and specialized ship construction The officials said that doesnt mean anada will stop building vessels for other countries But it has to reconsider its policies now that world shipbuilding ca pacity is well in excess of de mand We want to help make anav dian yards competitive with those in other countries one official said That would ensure they could handle all the do mestic ship demand and still be able to bid on foreign contracts for specialized ships such as bulk commodity forest product and icestrengthened craft To help the yards through their current slack eriod the government has ecided to He was among several jour nalists invited on the trip by Quantani Communications Montrealbased firm hired by Premier Frank Mooress gov ernment to promote its version of the hunt Ted Gorsline The Suns out door writer who accepted Quan tams invitation to travel to New York City said the jour naiists were given return air tickets and $1000 in spending money for which they had to account But only need couple of hundred he said Frank Petten press secretary for Moores said the trips for journalists are only part of the $120000 campaign the provincial government has initiated to defend the hunt Petten admitted that only re porters who had written stories the government considered ob jective were chosen for the tour Only one side of the story was being given and we hope to persuade these other writers to look at both sides of the story he said uild ships speed up ordering of five ves sels and seven searchandres cue craft worth $150 million and help provide major repair equipment for three yards Tenders will called soon for construction of new medium sized icebreaker sister to the Radisson and the Rankin to pa trol the Gulf of St Lawrence and replace the 25yearold diberville new largecapac ity ferry for Marine to carry railway cars trucks cars and passengers yearround between Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick
