rejected by county board 8ARL DEGlRSE TN The Examiner The Simcoe County Board of Education is against building separate French high school in Peiietanguishene After more than two hours of discussion Wednesday the board rejected the recom mendation of provincial government com mission that French school be built on the same site as ienetanguishenc Secondary School The final decision will be made by the ministry of education About 30 spectators some carrying signs saying justice pour franco ontaricns packr ed the Education Centre to hear the boards deliberations few others waited in the hall unable to fit into the crowded chambers The board recommended an addition or an nex be built onto the school in rare recorded vote 18 trustees opposed the separate French school and three were in favor of accepting the recommendation of the Languages of instruction Commission The boards decision is similar to its first stand on the issue made in September After the board first refused the request for separate French high school the French language Advisory Committee tFLACI ap preached the ministry of education The ministry appointed the Languages of instruction Commission to look into the mat ter in its report the commission says French high school is essential to lenetanguislienc because French language and culture is being assimilated into the English education system The French people in Penetanguishene understandably see the education system as the best line of defence against this trend says the report The board agrees with the commission that French students should have equal educa tional rights but it decided not enough students would attend the school to make it txlucationally or financially feasible Studies have placed the projected enr0l ment of French high school in Penetanguishcne at between 302 and 424 students in statement issued today Lloyd Flet cher chairman of the board said there arent enough students in the lcnetanguishcne area for the board to provide adequate programs if French and English students go their separate ways The board has decided that by utilizing present facilities and adding whatever is necessary to create French language unit with an appropriate cultural milieu the best interests of all can be served With cooperation among the board FLAC and the ministry of education an answer IS in sight which will ensure the best education for each of our students whatever their language or cultural background may be Rights of minority feasibility at stake Controversy about proposed French high school in Penttanguishcnc revolves around conflict between minority rights and finaii cial feasibility those involved say Supporters of the proposed school say in country with two official languages French speaking students have the right to bc educcatcd in French They say if French students attend an English school or men bilingual one they will lose their native language and culturi pponcnts of the proposed school say there arent enough French students in the lenetaiiguishene area to make it worth buildinganotiier school The burden on taxpayers would be too heavy just to cater to minority group they say They ask why build new school when declining enrolments mean there ill soon be empty seats in present facilities At meeting on Wednesday the Simcoe County Board of Education voted not to sup port separate French high school in Penctanguishcne The board recommendHl additions or an nexts be built onto lenctanguishcnc Secoii dary School an English school with limited French options see no reason why
