the examiner Thursday Dec 1978 39 cascade Victory sounds hard to forget By GARRY FORBES Of The Examiner At approximately pm Saturday an earpiercing scream will emanate from the girls gymnasium at Eastview Secon dary School There will also be other sounds in the gymnasium at that moment of that day But those sounds will be downed out by the screams The screams will be coming from members of the 197 On tario Federation of Schools Athletic Association giris basketball championship team in all liklihood from the same bunch wliic let out the shrill screech of victory in 0t tawa last year The team from Hamiltons Bishop Ryan High School have not lost confrontation on the courts in two years and are the overwhelming favourites in this fourth annual battle for the provincial title WINNING HOOPS Each of the 18 teams in the event which begins today and runs through Saturday at each of the four Barrie high schools have let out winning whoops of their own in the past few weeks Collingwood Collegiate drew in when Windsor school cancelled out last week certainly cause for celebration for the Collingwood gals and each of the other squads have recently earned their regional OFSAA ribbons But this is the big one This will be the Big Scream and any team thinking about registering an upset over Bishop Ryan will have to greatly surpass the skill and teamwork ex hibited in winning their divisional decorations Except for last years finalist Notre Dame of Welland none of the other teams should harbor any dreams of unseatiiig the defending champion from Hamilton But that unfortunately will not be the case Its the same sad fact in any tournament espeecially one of this magnitude when the outcome is so obvious The better the topseeded candidate for top honors is the bigger the hopes are among lesser teams of knocking them off And when the obvious occurs when the champion lets go with its victorious scream at pm Saturday other sounds will be produced The other sounds will be brief Some sniffles some sighs Some will be accompanied by smile and pat on the back but all will be as heartfelt the sounds made by the cham pions raving wildly in the middle of the court CHAMPIONS CELEBRATE Every member of every other team in the tournament will watch helplessly as the champions celebrate their well deserved victory Every player and coach will count the number of missed shots and poorlytimed layups which con tributed to their defeat and prevented them from perform ing the same ritual as the newlycrowned champs They wont realize until long after that the disappointment felt at that particular moment was an unnecessary harsh judgment on their performance They wont realize at least until the screams have died down that they had given their best in tournament which was as importnat to the top teams players as it was to themselves They will feel when they rub their aching muscles the feeling which comes when one realizes he has given his all in asporting competition Eventually the sense of pride which caused them to be en vious of the champions will give way to another kind of pride which causes them to reflect differently on the events of the championship Then the only sounds that will be remembered from the 1978 OFSAA championships will be the screams of delight from each win not only in the final game And those sounds will never be forgotten Good luck girls Nordiques enioy comeback victory QUEBEC ltCP The way Quebec Nordiques tell it suc cess against National Hockey League clubs in preseason games spoiled them for the start of the World Hockey Asso ciation campaign But with comefrombehind 63 victory Wednesday night over Edmonton Oilers in which the Nordiques assumed sole possession of second place in the WHA standings things have turned around for the club Real Cloutier scored two goals for the winners with Pau lin Bordeleau Bob Fitchner Danny Geoffrion and Rich Le duc scoring the other goals Wayne Gretzky had two goals and Doug Berry one for the OllCIS We came back pretty strong in the second half of the game said Marc Tardif who earned three assists for the Nordiqucs as they rebounded from 32 deficit after two periods They made our power play look pretty bad but after Richie Leduc scored in the second period we turned things around We had little letdown at the beginning of the year fol lowing our NHL exhibition games We thought wed be able to continue against the WHA clubs but it wasnt easy Every team that came in here was really up for us It took us couple of weeks to get going The Nordiques won five and lost one in exhibition games against NHL teams then started the WHA regular season with four losses and tie in five games and 251 wonlost tied record after eight games sports calendar THURSDAY Curling Barrie
