By PAUL DELEAN Examiner Staff Writer There are mermaids in Collingwood Hard to believe Just ask Ralph West of Creemore He coaches them The mermaids are Mr Wests daughters Sandy 12 and Terry They represent the total membership of the newlyfounded Huronia Mermaids swim club which Mr West describes as maybe the smallest in Canada The clubs current base of operations is the 50foot pool of the Collingwood Holiday Inn It has secured permission to use the pool from ms am and ms pm daily We try to make it all afternoons and good number of the mornings said Mr West They average 12 to 14 hours week That may seem like lot of time in the water for two young girls but their coach ex plains that their development as swimmers inges upon an intesive training program The top swimmers in their age bracket are swimming 15 to 20 hours week he said Tote swimmers is what he wants his charges to The Mermaids emphasizes Mr West is not recreational swimming club Its dedicated to hardcore competitive swimming The girls travel to topcalibre events such as in Windsor last week where both bettered their peak times from last season against in ternational competition It was the first meet of the season for the Mermiads Theyve been in training five weeks If you go to the first meet and do better than at your peak last year its very good said Mr West The girls travel to topcalibre events such as in Windsor last week where both bettered their peak times from last season against in ternational competition It was the first meet of the season for the Mermaids Theyve been in training five weeks If you go to the first meet and do better than at your peak last year its very good said Mr West To him the calibre of the competition is allimportant In Windsor only six of 25 clubs were from Ootario Many were from the United States Placing in swim meets is deceiving thing Until they reach top times are im portant and not the placing The placings will come they have to he said He is hopeful that both girls will eventually crack the international swimming circuit At their current stage of development they rate very close to the top in the region he said Each has been swimming for four years Sandy has swum Kempenfelt Bay on several occasions the first time at age She Notice of Public Hearing Ottawa October 12 1976 ISSUE NO OTTAWA ONTARIO NOVEMBER l6 I976 900 AM The Canadian swimmer in the event finished Mr West founded the Huronia Mermaids club after parting with the Barrie Nep tunes which he coached for two years The leaving was due to combination of problems among them not enough pool time and not seeing any chance of improving on it expenses and general philosophy of recrea tional versus competitive swimming GOOD TERMS felt majority of longstanding members wanted to pursue swimming in much more relaxed recreational manner But we parted on good terms Mr West After leaving Barrie he had the choice of coaching another club or starting his own He opted for the latter and Mermaids is now af filiated with the Canadian Amateur Swimm ing Association While conceding that its not recrea tional club by any means Mr West em phasizes that Its no torture chamber You cant achieve anything unless the children enjoy themselves The pleasure comes from achieving new level of ex cellence Mr West real estate broker resides in Creemore He owns 50metre pool four miles from his home but its uncovered and can only be used about four months year THANKS HOLIDAY Im extremely pleased with the co operation of management here the Holiday Inn They saw my predicament and allowed me to use their pool he said The ideal of course would be 50metre not sotoot pool But Mr West says that size of facility probably isnt an absolute necessity until and if the girls become swimmers of national or international calibre Thats minimum of three or four years away They can become top notch swimmers here in the Holiday Inn pool Will and abili ty are the number one thing The facilities are second And ingenuity can help We can do the things we have to do to get better here withou outside interference If our program fails to produce the results were looking for either they as swimmers didnt have it or as coach didnt achieve what thought could be achieved he says Despite its small membership the club is not seekingto expand atthistime Present pool facilities do not allow to enlarge the membership althou this could be possibility says the coac and presi dent Mr West concedes that theres another unknown factor should Sandy and Terry HLRONIA MERMAHLS swim club coach
