longterm patients outlined at auxiliary meeting By ROSEANNE MCCABE Examiner Staff Reporter Longterm patients at Royal Victoria Hospital are enjoying updated facilities and programs in the rehabilitation ward thanks to hard working committee Rennee Phillipps supervisor for the rehab ward spoke Tuesday to about 40 members of the Royal Victoria Hospital auxiliary Chronic patients and the elderly have become the focus of attention in medical fields Mrs Phillips said This is result of improved medicine and an increasing over65 population The need for better facilities in wards for these patients has really come to the fore Most hospitals are aware of the need she said is longsterm patient is someone who requires more than three months hospital care suffering from strokes or motor vehicle accident These people are rehabilitated by oc cupational therapy physiotherapy or speech therapy Mrs Phillips said The rehabilitation ward at RVH has 40 beds There are 14 registered nurses and 12 registered nursing assistants Committee members working on changes for the ward hope to include reality orientational therapy program to keep the person in touch with reality Mrs Phillips said This program which is used at Grove Park Home will be the topic of workshop in Novem ber at the University of Toron to Mrs Phillips said some it RENEE PHILLIPS committee members hope to at tend the workshop and in turn teach all staffers working with rehab patients the basics of reality orientational therapy shesaid For the program to work everyone from the cleaning lady to the nursing staff must be aware that Mrs Jones must be corrected when she thinks her husband is with her when he died four years ago she said Those on the committee in clude Dr Bruce Henry chair man Mrs Phillips Chris Page physiotherapist Rev Donald Peake hospital chaplain Willow Kneeshaw auxiliary member and Mrs Wigley RNA The committee is also im proving the physical ap pearance of the ward Mrs Phillips said They plan to hang wall murals and art by local ar tists Time is set aside for three times week where patients gather for group therapy sessions singssongs exercises and an opportunity to get acquainted Films will be shown the first Wednesday of every month with bingo on the remaining Wednesdays An adoptapatient program is also planned for those patien tswithoutrelatives Other programs include music entertainment from local choirs community outings and gardening Public clinics planned for flu immunization The Simcoe County Health Unit is preparing to immunize people 65 years of age or over and adults with chronic con ditions against both swine and Victoria influenza Because the swine influenza virus has not appeared in the world since the outbreak in New Jersey in February 1976 the provinces mass im munization has been delayed However this year double vaccine will be given to persons who normally should receive flu vaccine The vaccine will be available late in October through to December to health units only The local health unit is already consulting with doctors to determine who should receive the vaccme Public clinic for these and all persons over 65 years of age will take place from mid November on in about 12 locations in the county Dates and locations will be announced later According to Dr Nancy Arm brust director of the health unitA Victoria influenza oc curred in the northern hemisphere in late winter and well on into spring of this year It is still present in some parts of the world and will no doubt reappear in Ontario and Simcoe County during the coming winter she said Last year there was less flu than usual in Simcoe County and therefore many of us could be victims of this virus Dr Armbrust said For this reason strongly recommend that those who are eligible for the double vaccine take the opportunity to be protected The chronic conditions which make people more susceptible to influenza are chest heart kidney conditions diabetes an dimmobilization partial or complete in wheelchair or bed Dr Armbrust said the general public can best avoid influenza by maintaining good health habits in relation to diet physical activity and sleep
